Regina Hicks’ “Black Don’t Crack” Snagged by ABC, Viola Davis to Exec Produce

Davis in “How to Get Away with Murder

A new comedy from “Insecure” writer and co-executive producer Regina Hicks has sold to ABC, Deadline reports. The multi-camera show about old friends counts Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis among its executive producers.

Written by Hicks, who also exec produces, the series follows “three former sorority sisters who lost touch after college [as they] reunite during a pivotal point in each of their lives and realize that now that they are of a certain age sometimes it’s okay to crack and no one will be there for you like your sisters,” the source summarizes.

Davis and Julius Tennon are exec producing through their production company, JuVee Productions, which has an overall deal with ABC Studios. Also exec producing is “Insecure” co-creator Larry Wilmore.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of this exciting project and to collaborate with the crazy talented Regina Hicks,” Wilmore said. “‘Bdc’ is hilarious, heartwarming, and shines a light on women who are hiding in plain sight.”

“Sister, Sister,” “Girlfriends,” and “Camp Rock” are among Hicks’ previous credits.

Upcoming JuVee Production titles include Claire McCarthy’s period drama “The Personal History Of Rachel Dupree,” a biopic about trailblazing Texas Congresswoman and civil rights activist Barbara Jordan, and an HBO film about abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who helped hundreds of African-Americans escape slavery through the Underground Railroad. All three projects star Davis.

Tracee Ellis Ross Talks ‘Black-ish,’ Winning a Golden Globe, Emmy Nomination
When “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross won the Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy or musical TV series in January, she became the first black woman since Debbie Allen of “Fame” in 1982 to win in that category. Next month, Ross has a second shot at history. If she takes the Emmy for comedy actress, she’ll be the first black woman to do so since “The Jeffersons” actress Isabel Sanford in 1981.

What did it mean to win the Golden Globe?

The magnitude of the larger historical context took it out of my personal feelings and into the larger spectrum of what we as an industry and what we as a culture are saying. Diversity and inclusion are still a question because they have not been answered. We are not, as an industry and as a culture, doing a good enough job of telling balanced stories of who we are as a people. So

The pair have previously collaborated on shows like “Being Mary Jane,” “The Game,” and “Girlfriends,” all of which were created by Brock Akil. Both Akils are credited as creators and will executive produce the series through their Akil Productions banner. Brock Akil will take on showrunning duties.

“I’ve dreamed of working with the Akils. I’ve been a huge fan of their work since first viewing ‘Girlfriends,’” said Winfrey. “They know just how to hit the cultural nerve to make you think and laugh at the same time.”

Brock Akil added, “To have a partner that brings the attention to detail and sheer excellence that Oprah has built an empire on is an absolute dream come true for Salim and me. That, and it’s Oprah! ‘Love Is ___’ is not only a passion project, but is a personal one for us as well. We’re grateful to have her wholehearted support and magic touch behind this story.”

There are places I didn’t get to go with ‘Being Mary Jane.’ Those things still live in me,” she explained. “The past years have been me getting out what I wanna say about black women. I’m really excited that this deal will be more inclusive of [Salim’s] voice and what he wants to say about black men. No one’s really heard his voice yet.”
