Marlee Matlin lobbies for 'CSI: Chicago'

17 December 2010 8:33 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

If Marlee Matlin has her way, there will be more "CSI" dramas than just the three -- the original, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," and its spin-offs, ("CSI: Miami" and "CSI: NY") that CBS has on the air now.

Matlin guest-stars in an episode of the original "CSI," tentatively scheduled to air Thursday, Feb. 3. In "The Two Mrs. Grissoms," which has been in production this past week, Matlin plays Julia Holden, a professor at a college for the deaf, whose mentor is fellow professor Betty Grissom (Phyllis Frelich), mother of former head CSI Gil Grissom (William Petersen).

This causes tension with Grissom's current wife, CSI Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox), who simultaneously must deal with her mother-in-law and with Julia, who's also Grissom's ex-girlfriend. It doesn't help that both Julia and Mrs. Grissom are deaf and can speak to each other in American Sign Language, which Sara is struggling to learn.

As to whether Mrs. »

'Dancing With the Stars' veteran Marlee Matlin applauds Bristol Palin

17 December 2010 7:58 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

By going on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" in 2008, deaf actress Marlee Matlin took the chance to challenge expectations.

In the sixth cycle of the hit ballroom-dancing competition/reality series, Matlin lasted into week six, earning consistent 7s and 8s (out of 10) from the judges.

So, Matlin knows about working hard to learn something new and unfamiliar, and she appreciates others that do the same. That includes possibly the show's most talked-about contestant, Bristol Palin, who came in third in the most recent "Dwts" season.

On Wednesday (Dec. 15), in a break in her trailer between takes during a guest-starring appearance on CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," tentatively scheduled to air on Thursday, Feb. 3, Matlin tells Zap2it in sign language, through an interpreter, "My opinion on Bristol is that I really applaud her. I saw, from the very beginning, that she wasn't a good dancer, but she had her own identity. »

'The Fighter' star Mark Wahlberg aces Justin Bieber quiz (with a little help)

10 December 2010 1:10 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

No stranger to teenage pop idols, actor Mark Wahlberg is apparently something of a Justin Bieber fan.

In a recent interview with MTV News for his film, "The Fighter," discussion quickly turned to Justin Bieber -- as it so often does. And when faced with a pop Bieber quiz, Wahlberg fared remarkably well.

Wahlberg knew Bieber's TV cameo ("C.S.I."), his manager (Scooter Braun), his most-watched music video ("Baby") and, with a little prodding, the name of his upcoming 3D movie ("Never Say Never").

One thing Wahlberg just couldn't think of was the name of Bieber's freshman album ("My World"), but, in his defense, he did come up with the infinitely more entertaining "Backstreet's Back" for an answer.

How well would you fare on a Bieber quiz? »

TV Review: Shocking Mid-Season Premiere of TNT Hit ‘The Closer’

6 December 2010 11:42 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – It’s nearly impossible to write about the details of the season premiere of “The Closer” as TNT has asked us not to discuss the shocking events that open the episode so we will have to talk around the specifics more than usual. You may wonder why or how we can review an episode with no details? We’ll give it a shot because this is excellent television and we wouldn’t want to leave it un-reviewed.

Television Rating: 4.0/5.0

The Closer” has earned a loyal following and consistently-impressive ratings but it sometimes gets lumped in with other serial mysteries-of-the-week like the “C.S.I.” and “Law & Order” franchises. This program is much better than your standard serial mystery for two reasons — one, it’s nowhere near as predictable in tone or execution and, two, most of those other programs don’t have an actor or actress nearly as talented as the Emmy-winning Kyra Sedgwick. »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series,’ ‘Sherlock’ Are Both Great

21 November 2010 2:31 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Two of the more beloved and acclaimed properties in the 2010 BBC output were released on Blu-ray this month and both should be near the top of holiday wish lists for genre fans. The simple fact is that BBC is doing fantasy, science fiction, and even thriller better than anyone right now and one need look no further than “Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series” and “Sherlock,” two sets brimming with greatness.

Doctor Who: The Complete Fifth Series”

Blu-Ray Rating: 5.0/5.0

The eleventh doctor made his debut this year in the fifth series of the new version of “Doctor Who” and one of the best sci-fi programs of the ’00s not only didn’t lose a step but arguably improved. The elder stateman of the best network on television in terms of genre programming (with other great offerings that include “Torchwood,” “Primeval,” and “Being Human” among others) shows no »

'CSI' casts '90210's' Trevor Donovan as a sexy Spartan

9 November 2010 3:16 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Trevor Donovan has been missing in action from a few episodes of "90210" this season as his character, Teddy, struggles to come to terms with his sexuality. Donovan isn't having any trouble finding ways to spend his free time, though -- Zap2it confirms that the Beverly Hills hottie has been cast in an upcoming episode of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

The episode is titled "Man Up" and is expected to air in early January. The team investigates a seemingly staged online photo of a hooker who has been strangled to death in a dumpster. They're surprised to find that the woman has actually been murdered.

Donovan's character is an actor who plays a Spartan in one of the casino's extravaganzas. The network describes the character as "a handsome beefcake with a great body, a male model." We'd say that's about accurate.

The Spartan eagerly tells Nick (George Eads) that he »

Blowback, Save Caprica campaign, and cast updates

8 November 2010 5:30 PM, PST | CapricaTV | See recent CapricaTV news »

Caprica 1x14, "Blowback," finally had its international premiere yesterday, for lack of a better word. The episode was written by Kevin Murphy and directed by Omar Madha, and it's definitely one of the best episodes so far. If you have seen it, wherever you may have seen it, you can rate it below.

Space posted the Innerspace podcast on their website the other day and it's definitely something worth checking out, especially if you're also a fan of Stargate Universe. You can find it at Spacecast.com. Among other things, they explain why Caprica isn't available for viewing on their site and voice their surprise at Syfy's decision to pull the show off the air and alienate their BSG fan base the way they did.

They have also apologized to the Canadian viewers who missed last week's episode because their DVRs hadn't registered the last minute schedule change in time. »

Primetime viewership on Thursdays -- which features TV's most expensive commercial time -- is down 14% from a year ago.Thursday night, one of the most lucrative areas for broadcasters, is losing viewers, the Wall Street Journal reported.Fewer Americans are watching primetime TV on the night this fall as a result of changes in viewing habits, weaker shows and an increased variety of competition, especially from cable, according to the WSJ.As a result, this season the night is trailing Sundays through Wednesdays in the key adults 18-49 demo, the one most sought after by advertisers. Overall, the broadcast networks have seen a 14% decline in viewership from the same period a year ago, according to Nielsen data cited by the WSJ.The drop is significant because broadcasters have generally been able to charge more for commercials on Thursday nights from advertisers looking to make a big push for new movies, »
