Fox Searchlight privy to 'Knowing'

22 May 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Fox Searchlight has picked up Escape Artists' Knowing in turnaround from Columbia Pictures. The supernatural thriller, which has just been greenlighted, will be directed by Richard Kelly. The project will be Kelly's follow-up feature to cult favorite Donnie Darko, which he wrote and made his directorial debut on in 2001. Knowing is the story of a man who unearths a time capsule with children's drawings predicting the future that was buried in the 1950s. One child's drawings predicted several horrible events that already have come true; however, one of those events has not yet occurred, and the man sets out to prevent it from happening. Ryne Pearson wrote the original draft, which was rewritten by Kelly. Escape Artists partners Steve Tisch, Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and David Alper are producing the project. Kelly came aboard the project as writer and director in March 2002 (HR 3/11/2002). »

Tobey Is Definitely Returning as Spider-Man

20 March 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hollywood hunk Tobey Maguire assures fans he's definitely reprising his role as Spider-Man. Reports emerged on Tuesday that a bad back sustained from his role as a jockey in upcoming movie Seabiscuit had put his return as the webslinging superhero in doubt. Donnie Darko hunk Jake Gyllenhaal was also reported to be up as a replacement for the role, which would allow him to appear on-screen alongside his real-life girlfriend Kirsten Dunst. But Gyllenhaal has never been offered the role, and Maguire never had intentions of pulling out of the project. The doubts over Maguire's return came after his publicist Kelly Bush expressed concerns about the strength of the actor's back. But it was never stated that Maguire would not reprise his role. Maguire, 27, is repeating his routine of yoga, weight training and bulking up to once more transform for the role which this time will earn him $17 million - four times more than what he earned for the original, which became the biggest box office smash of 2002. The Amazing Spider-Man, which is set for a May 2004 release, will begin filming next month. »

Julia Upset with Danny's Flirting

17 March 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Julia Roberts and Danny Moder's eight-month marriage is on shaky grounds following a bust-up about the cameraman's flirting with young actress Kirsten Dunst. Roberts reportedly blew up into a rage when she learned of her husband's flirting ways with her Mona Lisa Smile co-star Dunst - who is romancing Donnie Darko star Jake Gyllenhaal. A set insider has told American tabloid National Enquirer, "A rumor circulated around the set that Julia barged in on Danny and Kirsten when they were in her trailer. Kirsten later apologized to Julia, saying, 'Nothing really happened, ' but Julia wasn't buying it." Friends say the couple have since patched up their differences in a bid to have a baby together, but friends fear the tempestuous couple are sure for more showdowns. A pal says, "It could all blow up tomorrow and Julia could stalk out for good." »

No Nudity for Jake Gyllenhaal--Yet!

24 February 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Donnie Darko star Jake Gyllenhaal has turned down the opportunity to work with an acclaimed Italian filmmaker, because he doesn't want to take his clothes off. The young hunk was offered a role in Bernado Bertolucci's The Dreamers, but refused because he has strict rules concerning on-screen disrobing. The Good Girl star claims he'll only agree to nudity in his roles when it plays a part in the story telling of the movie. He says, "I'll show my d*ck if it helps the narrative. I'm not going to throw my d*ck around just because. And if I do it, I want to establish a base of trust and have a final say in how much of my body is shown." However, the more gregarious streak in the family can be found in sibling Maggie Gyllenhaal. Jake adds, "My sister's naked in Secretary and it was in Playboy later. But she made a great movie and it was part of the narrative and she said if it's in Playboy f*ck it. more publicity for the movie. At least the movie told a great story." »

Gyllenhaal Siblings Defy Traditional Rivalry

19 February 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Acting siblings Jake Gyllenhaal and Maggie Gyllenhaal refuse to be drawn into a rivalry over their careers - because they have too much love for each other. The sexy stars have both wowed audiences in the last few years - Jake in Donnie Darko and The Good Girl, Maggie in Secretary - and often find that other people are trying to stir competitiveness between them. Jake says, "I think we are less competitive now. We've realized our competition doesn't come from each other. It's from the outside, people pushing the competition and us being like, 'Wait. What the f*** are we doing? I love you. I love you too. There's no need for this'. Then again, we both want to do great work. I know she's great, but the choices she makes come from the same places mine do. It's like watching me sometimes. We're really close that way. Maggie's my best friend." »
