Why Chinese Legend Chow-Yun Fat Is Banned From Making Movies In China

28 October 2014 5:19 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Thanks to films like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Bulletproof Monk, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it wouldn't be too big a stretch to call Chow Yun-Fat one of the biggest international stars to ever come out of China. But now his homeland's government is attempting to cripple his career over his political views, putting him on a black list domestically. Shanghaiist reports Chow Yun-Fat has been banned from working on film productions in mainland China by the socialist government there. His crime is being pro-democrat, publically supporting the student protests that have been popping up over the past five weeks. He first spoke out in early October, as reported by THR he told Apple Daily, "I.ve met the residents, the students . they are very brave and it.s touching to see that they.re fighting for what they want. The students are reasonable. If the government »

Netflix, Weinstein Co. Bust Windows With ‘Crouching Tiger’ Sequel Day-and-Date Release

29 September 2014 6:03 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Netflix has reached a deal with The Weinstein Co. for its first original movie — a sequel to Ang Lee’s 2000 martial arts pic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” — set to hit IMAX theaters and the streaming-video service simultaneously next summer.

The film, “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend,” is slated for a Aug. 28, 2015, debut. Produced by Weinstein Co., the movie is the first of several major films to premiere day-and-date both on the Svod service (at no extra charge) and in select IMAX theaters worldwide. Financial terms of the pact were not disclosed.

Netflix has been eyeing day-and-date releases of movies, as chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in a keynote last year at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles. The launch of the movie is likely to catch the ire of exhibitors — who have in the past viewed digital encroachment on theatrical windows as a threat.

Breck Eisner exits Karate Kid 2, new writers hired

26 June 2014 1:20 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It was only back in April when Breck Eisner (The Crazies) had signed on to direct a sequel to the reboot of The Karate Kid, but it looks like he has already parted ways according to Deadline. Although it’s not what you’d think, it’s just because of scheduling difficulties. No new director has been announced nor has a shortlist.

In other Karate Kid news, the studio have also hired two new writers to punch up the script. Jeremiah Friedman and Nick Palmer (neither of whom have writing credits to their names) have been brought on to re-write the Karate Kid 2 script which was originally penned by Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk), Ethan Reiff (Kung Fu Panda) and Cyrus Voris (Bulletproof Monk).

Original stars Jackie Chan (Rush Hour) and Jaden Smith (After Earth) are set to reprise their roles for the sequel, although no plot details have been announced. »
