He is his father's son.
michaelRokeefe3 May 2003
Ho-hum. An inventor's(Horst Buchholz)deadly biological weapon is in danger of falling into the wrong hands. Unknowingly his son(Luke Perry)has been working on the antedote all along. Enter CIA agent Olivia d'Abo and the cat-and-mouse car chases and gunfire begins. Also in the cast are:Tom Conti, Hendrick Haese and an aging Roger Moore. Moore seems to haggardly move through this mess definitely not one of his better efforts. Perry fans will be accepting. d'Abo is wrong for the role, but nice to look at.

A bad movie!
Ffolkes-311 February 2002
It's definitely not enough to say that the movie is bad. It's very, very bad. Its terribly predictible plot and a weak, amateurish direction doesn't help the viewers to get rid of the feeling that they were simply cheated. There are two good actors in it: Roger Moore and Tom Conti but even they can't save "The Enemy" from falling. Luke Perry can't save the day and so can't Olivia d'Abo. The pairing of the two doesn't work at all and that's because they're a fourth league performers who, even in a pseudo-erotic scene, can't afford expressing any emotions. I feel sorry for Moore and Conti that they appeared in such a crap. I hope their future projects will be much more watchable and less conventional.

Predictable TV Movie thriller fare
andydavis-8788011 February 2022
Might amuse those who like to say - ooh wasn't he in thanks to appearances by Tom Conti, Hortz Bucholz and Roger Moore. I find it hard to remember what was what here. Bucholz is some sort of mad scientist refugee on the run type. His equally intelligent son, Luke Perry, needs to recreate his experiments quick when he disappears. After that it is all - who can he trust and a couple of explosions. The final twist is well signalled.

Are you for real?
nitai3426 April 2008
Horrible acting, horrible cast and cheap props. Would've been a lot better if was set as an action parody style movie. What a waste. Starting from the name of the movie.

"The Enemy" Naming it "Action Movie" would've made it better. (contributing to the parody effect). The cop looking like a 60 Year old player, the blond girl just having the same blank boring look on her face at all times. Towards the end of the movie him and her are working together to take down the bad guys and every time they exchange words it just feels like the cheap lines given before a sex scene in a porn movie. Horrible. Don't waste your time.

The Enemy
CinemaSerf9 June 2023
Oh dear - what a mess. Scientist Luke Perry ("Michael") joins up with RCMP officer "Johnson" (Olivia d'Abo) to hunt down a missing scientist (Horst Buchholz) who has developed a weapon capable of annihilating mankind. Sir Roger Moore is the head of MI6 who offers them a helping hand tracking down the nasty "Mannek" (Hendrick Haese) and hopefully reconciling father with son - yes, of course there is some contrived familial tie up to it all. The thing flows like glue; Sir Roger looks like he is there under extreme duress and though handsome once, Perry no longer has his looks to fall back on so his acting talents (or lack of them) are somewhat exposed. To be fair to all, the script and direction are pretty dire too, the thing sort of lolls along like a slug on a pathway. The last ten minutes are slightly enlivening though, so maybe just spool through 80 minutes and just watch that - you won't have missed much.

Thoroughly Absymal Despite Roger Moore's Presence
zardoz-133 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Watching director Tom Kinninmont's "The Enemy" on DVD, I was felt like I could pause the disk and leave it that way for an eternity. The only reason for seeing this low-budget, lightweight trifle was the casting of former James Bond 007 Roger Moore as the head of MI6. As Dr. Michael Ashton, Luke Perry plays the son of brilliant geneticist George Ashton (Horst Buchholz of "Tiger Bay") and Michael thinks that he knows who is father is. Truth is Perry doesn't have a clue because his father once worked for the KGB, created a deadly toxin, and now is the hunt list of every espionage agency in the world because terrorists want his toxin as a weapon. Kinninmont could have photographed a game of croquet for all the thrills and chills that he drums up in this lukewarm adventure. Luke Perry is as listless as this movie is slow. Perry isn't convincing as a scientist who occasionally pops off a shot at the bad guys and nails one. Roger delivers his lines with class, and he acts like he really believes something terrible is going to happen. Maryam's first cousin once removed, Olivia d'Abo plays pistol-packing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt. Penny Johnson. She allies herself with Perry, and they share feelings for one another while Perry's pop (Buchholz) struggles to outwit the villains. The trigger happy villain Mannek (Hendrick Haese of "The Point Men") is fairly brutal and doesn't have a qualm about shooting and killing people who get in his way. Roger Moore gets armed and dangerous during the last ten minutes, and RCMP Inspector John Cregar (Tomi Conti) delivers his lines well, too. Lackluster from start to finish, "The Enemy" is an adversary you shouldn't watch. Only Roger Moore completests should bother.

Nice To See Roger Back On Screen
mccall-46 January 2002
Not as bad a film as i thought it would be.

It has a good cast.Nice to see Roger Moore back on screen as well as the use of other British actors.

Would like to see more of Olivia D`Abo in future projects.Maybe starring opposite her cousin the sexy Maryam D`Abo.

Also a good use of unseen locations such as Luxembourg.

Hopefully we will see more UK-European co-productions like this.

Good cast, too short.
walterlv9 March 2001
The cast is excellent, the acting good, the plot interesting, the evolvement full of suspense...but it is hard to cram all those elements into a film that is barely 80 minutes long. If more time was taken to develop the plot and subplots, it would have a much better effect. Another 30 minutes of substance would have made this a very good film rather then just a good one.

Cool, Dylan is a nuclear geneticist or somethingorother!
mbkfox17 March 2013
I bought this DVD to watch Luke Perry, to continue on my journey in watching everything he's done. He was good in it and believable. I only found out afterwards that the British sounding guy was a James Bond. Cool. I expected a B-movie plot, budget, and acting, and a sub par story that will hopefully have me a little entertained. So, in all those regards, boy did this movie deliver! I had fun watching, didn't grow bored, and there were plenty of chase and action scenes to keep the excitement going for those who like that sort of genre, too.

Luke likes to try different roles, like the bad guy, the southern guy, the husbandy guy, the shady guy, etc. to try to expand his versatility, I guess, and I can't hold that against him. It's his acting career and his choice to make. But I'm a fan of Dylan! It's my favorite type of role of his. He's recreated the Dylan character in other shows after 90210, like in Jeremiah. I was overjoyed to see that for this role he brought out more Dylan, albeit a genius version of it, which is fine! It seems that he has a comfortability doing that role whenever he plays a character that has a strenuous relationship with his father, like in 90210 and Jeremiah. So, in that regard, this movie really delivered for me, awesome stuff!

Rated R for violence that you would see on TV and "some language"? Weird.

The movie got a tad technical at times and that could be a bit confusing, with gene splicing, Interpol, and computer jargon, but it stayed honest enough that it sounded all legit. A funny part of the movie where it was a "big reveal" (don't worry, it was only a big reveal for a split second of the scene) when the main character says, "Tell me now! What does WMD stand for!" And when he got his answer it was supposed to be eye-opening. It's sad that only a few months after the release of this movie, WMD became a household term.

Recommended if you're a Luke Perry fan and want to see more of his work. Also recommended if you're a B-movie fan and like action movies that no one has heard of. Not much else reason to watch this one.

pretty good, didn't need all of those exploding cars
angelbreath39 February 2001
This movie was pretty good. The acting was great, and there were some really great actors in it like, Buchholz and Roger Moore. This film is full of surprises. Confusing at times...yes, but the twists and turns of the plot always keeps you in suspense. The only thing that this movie had too much of was exploding cars.

This is a very great film.
tasscif15 May 2020
Why is it that critics write bad reviews on things that are good such as the theatre the better a play is the more it receives negative reviews. The same goes for films this one especially, I promise that this film is very good and definatly worth watching, ignore those people who do not know a good film when they see one, they are wrong.
