Growing up in an India that was on the bridge between cultural orthodox and a rapidly growing global presence, I had the golden chance of being witness to this series. "Swami and Friends" as it was originally called, was quite possibly Shankar Nag's best directorial efforts on TV (apart from the highly acclaimed "Malgudi Days". I remember, as a family, making sure that we all had dinner in front of the television set to make sure we did not miss this series. A great cast from both the Karnataka industry and the Bombay film studios, "Swami" was a great story about a young boy and his life in pre-independent India. Written by my all time favorite Sh.R.K.Narayan, this series will remain a part of me for the rest of my life.
We will miss you Shankar.
