A poor young girl has a burning desire to find comfort and happiness in her life. Desperate to keep warm, the girl lights the matches she sells, and envisions a very different life for herself in the fiery flames.
I can remember seeing this on HBO back in the summer of '91, being just a little kid at the time, I could appreciate the feature's use of music and animation. It is a superb cartoon that has never gotten the recognition it deserves and has disappeared into the vaults.
P.S. - Director Mike Sporn made another animation feature called "Whitewash", which deals with racism in The Bronx. Another exceptional cartoon.
