Firth hands Oxfam trade petition to EU

5 December 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

BRUSSELS -- British actor Colin Firth handed a petition signed by ten million people to Europe's trade chief Monday, urging him to secure a trade deal next week to help the world's poorest countries. Firth gave the 'Big Noise' petition -- organized by aid group Oxfam -- to European Union trade commissioner Peter Mandelson in Brussels. The actor, who has starred in such films as Bridget Jones's Diary and Love Actually, called on the ministers meeting at the World Trade Organization talks in Hong Kong next week to end the "simply intolerable" system of subsidies, tariffs and food dumping by rich nations that is blamed for impeding the development of poor countries. »

Collette Regrets Losing Out to Zellweger

12 October 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Australian actress Toni Collette is still bitter she lost out on starring roles in Bridget Jones's Diary and Chicago to Renee Zellweger, because she had been promised the parts by producers. Collette, who is currently starring alongside Cameron Diaz in In Her Shoes, was unable to play Bridget Jones because she was appearing in a Broadway play, and Zellweger's subsequent success in the role convinced the Weinstein brothers to cast her in Chicago - at Collette's expense. The 32-year-old tells The Scoop, "I was doing Wild Party. I was offered Bridget Jones's Diary at the time, but couldn't do it because I didn't know how long Wild Party was going to play. Then the Chicago lot said, 'We want you to do this, don't take anything else. We want to put you on tape just as a formality. Catherine Zeta-Jones is really excited to work with you.' Then Bridget Jones's Diary came out and I guess the Weinsteins had their way." »

Zellweger Slams Wedding Rift Rumours

2 August 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Oscar-winner Renee Zellweger has slammed reports her three month marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney is in trouble. British newspaper the Daily Mail claimed on Saturday, the famous couple have barely spent any time together since their wedding in May. The 36-year-old Texan actress and 37-year-old musician married on the Caribbean island of St. John after a whirlwind four month courtship. A unnamed friend of the Bridget Jones beauty alleged, "The realities of married life are hitting them both awfully hard. Renee had no idea how involved in every aspect of her life Kenny would want to be. She'd never even seen him lose his temper before the wedding, but now he seems to think he can tell Renee what to do, what to wear, where to go and who to see. He doesn't seem to like her hanging out with her old friends." Zellweger's publicist Nanci Ryder has laughed off the rumors, saying their relationship is "great." Meanwhile, Chesney's spokeswoman Holly Gleason remarks, "He's focusing on what he does best: making music." »

Lohan Has Digital Breast Reduction

6 June 2005 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Teen actress Lindsay Lohan's breasts have been digitally reduced for forthcoming Disney film Herbie: Fully Loaded, to avoid offending family audiences. Test screenings for the new movie, the fourth sequel to the 1968 film The Love Bug about a Volkswagen Beetle car with a mind of its own, indicated that some parents felt Lohan's character Maggie Peyton was too raunchy for a children's film. Disney technicians were forced to plough through numerous scenes - especially those showing the busty actress jumping up and down at a motor racing track, reducing her breasts by two cup sizes and raising revealing necklines on her T-shirts. Amused at her digital bosom reduction, Lohan says, "I don't know how Renee Zellweger kept swelling and shrinking for Bridget Jones. It's no fun. Bring on the computer guys." »
