Zellwegger Dumped for "Bridget Baggage"

10 November 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Renee Zellwegger has split from rocker Jack White for good - because he hated her Bridget Jones's Diary routine. The American star has piled on the pounds again to play the neurotic title character in upcoming sequel The Edge Of Reason - and her 'becoming' Bridget proved too much for edgy White Stripes frontman Jack, who's finally walked away from their on-off relationship. Insiders say Jack was worried Renee's middle-of-road Bridget persona would affect his own work, making him less dynamic. A source on the film's set reveals, "It looks like it's all over for Renee and Jack - and for good this time. Things have looked bleak for a while but there have been plenty of phone calls to give them hope, falsely as it now turns out. The bottom line is that Jack didn't want to lose his creative edge. Cuddly nights in with piles of junk food are just not for him. He's told her to get in touch after she's finished this project and shed the Bridget baggage. Jack sees it as a lifestyle choice, that combined with the distance between them equals a temporary dead end. Renee thinks he's just being shallow. There's no way she'll go back for more." The pair met while filming Cold Mountain, the hotly-tipped Jude Law and Nicole Kidman film that was Jack's Hollywood debut. »

31 October 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Renee Zellweger has been offered a massive $3.2 million to shed the weight she's put on for the Bridget Jones's Diary sequel, once shooting has wrapped. Diet giants Weightwatchers are tempting the Oscar nominee with a $110,000-per-pound sponsorship deal if she manages to lose 30 pounds after the movie, which has already netted the actress a reported $24 million. The company want Zellweger to follow British royal Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess Of York's slimming plan and appear with her in adverts when filming finishes on the Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason set at the start of next year. An insider says, "This is the easiest cash she'll ever earn. Being paid to eat more to play Bridget again is great, but getting even more cash just to shift that weight is beyond belief." »

Zellweger Promises More Confident Bridget

25 September 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Renee Zellweger is promising an improved Bridget Jones - because she's now far more confident in the role. The star was nervous about her appearance in the 2001 original Bridget Jones' Diary because she was an American star playing a quintessentially British part. But as she prepares for filming of sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason, the 34-year-old's confidence has been boosted by the warm reaction she received on both sides of the Atlantic playing the British singleton. She says, "This time I'm a lot more confident. Last time when I went to England they were out with the knives because they were outraged that an American actress was playing this British icon. I could see they wanted a hometown girl in the part because Bridget is the quintessential young, modern English working woman. But by now I hope I have showed them I can do it. I love Bridget. I feel very close to her. We both have had our ups and downs when it comes to love." »

Firth Joins Bridget Jones Sequel After Curtis Steps In

15 September 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Colin Firth only agreed to star in the Bridget Jones' Diary sequel after British film-maker Richard Curtis stepped in to rewrite the script. The production has been plagued with troubles ever since the three main stars Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant and Firth refused to commit to The Edge Of Reason unless they were entirely happy with the script. After original drafts by novelist Helen Fielding and celebrated scriptwriter Andrew Davies needed further work, Curtis - who has just directed both Grant and Firth in Love Actually - was brought in, and now a previously resistant Firth has given the project the go-ahead. He says, "I'm now happy with the script, which has been through various drafts, the latest of which was by Richard Curtis." »

Renee's Fat $3.2 Million Bonus

14 August 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Slimline movie actress Renee Zellweger is reportedly being paid a $3.2 million bonus to pack on the pounds for her reprised role as Bridget Jones. The petite Chicago star is already on a high-fat diet in order to achieve the rounder figure needed for the British singleton - and film producers have guaranteed her $112,000 for every pound out of the 30 she manages to put on. A source tells British tabloid The Daily Star, "Renee's getting nearly £15 million for the sequel and the bonus is on top of that. She hates gaining weight to play Bridget and know's she's going to have a hard time losing it again." Svelte Renee first played Bridget in hit 2001 movie Bridget Jones' Diary but soon lost the weight she gained for the role - with some believing she'd gotten too thin. But the amazing success of the Hugh Grant-starring flick meant Renee was tempted back to the role for Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason. However, the actress is having a hard time dealing with her calorie-packed diet. She told a friend, "I'm eating so much I sometimes feel sick. But I might as well enjoy it while I can." »

Joplin Talks to Zellweger From Beyond the Grave

3 July 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Musical legend Janis Joplin has spoken to actress Renee Zellweger from beyond the grave - to give advice on how to play her correctly. The tragic star, who died in 1970 after a drug overdose, reportedly has such a strong connection with the svelte Bridget Jones star - who has signed to play her in an upcoming biopic - that Renee communicates with her as she sleeps to ensure Janis' story is told properly. A source close to Renee tells British tabloid The Daily Express, "She says Janis speaks to her in her dreams and tells her the way she wants her story told. "Just talking to Renee about Janis is enough to freak a person out. It's like Joplin is standing there right beside her. Renee told me that when she sings a Joplin song, its really Joplin's voice she's using, coming right out of her mouth. I've heard her sing two of Joplin's songs and it's quite a chilling experience." »

Zellweger Hails Bridget Jones Sequel

2 July 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Renee Zellweger is vowing the Bridget Jones' Diary sequel will be every bit as good as the much-loved original. Filming has yet to begin on Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason, but the Oscar-nominated actress has agreed to pile the pounds back on for the role - something she would have refused to do if the script wasn't good enough. Dedicated Renee swears, "No one wants to do the sequel unless the screenplay is as good as the first one. We don't want to do a sequel just because the first one made a lot of money. We owe it to the fans of the characters to make a good, if not better, film the second time around. When I first said I didn't want to play Bridget again it was just after I had worked hard to lose the weight and suffered a lot of bad press because of how I looked. But now I see what a special character she was to play." »

However, the undeterred producers have now approached Pulp Fiction star Travolta to star in the adaptation of Helen Fielding's follow-up novel Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason. »

Renee Plays Down Carrey Romance

Jim Carrey might be able to feign good loving as God in new movie Bruce Almighty - but he failed to make the earth move for his ex, Renee Zellweger. The actress was devastated when the couple's romance fizzled out at Christmas 2000 amid reports of an upcoming marriage, but admits, looking back, Carrey wasn't her most treasured romance. She reveals, "We were together for less than a year, and half that time, I was in England filming Bridget Jones's Diary. That relationship got so much attention because he was famous. What I'll say about Jim is that he's very, very talented. But I've had much longer- lived relationships that have had a much more resounding effect on my life." Zellweger refutes claims the pair were engaged. She adds, "We were not engaged. The papers described the ring, which didn't exist, and they had all this other stuff that was so totally false." »

However, those close to Cole suggest he'd be reluctant to take on somebody else's project after the expected success of Calendar Girls - which is due out in September. Britain's Daily Mail claim film bosses are currently trying to persuade Zellweger to let them stick with Kidron - whose previous hits include To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. »
