Twelve contestants who have never met each other before are blindfolded and driven to one of three locations on the Stockton Sand Dunes on the mid-north coast of New South Wales, little realising that every decision that they make has an effect on how much money will be in the pot. One day later, they scale new heights when they have to perform a relay across a high wire twenty storeys above ground in a gully in the Blue Mountains.
The final four pairs of contestants face their fears on the high wire relay, then the next day, they meet host Shura Taft near Mount Victoria, in another part of the Blue Mountains, for their next challenge, where they are divided into two teams of six that start at opposite ends of a track and are given 90 minutes to carry heavy bags of money to meet each other somewhere in the middle of the track in order to win the money that is in their bags for the pot, a challenge that will see personalities grate and egos clash. The following evening, they travel to Middle Head...
The morning after their night under the stars, the contestants take part in a quick challenge that tests their frayed minds, before they return to the campsite to face one final challenge that puts their trust to the test, with an exemption up for grabs. They then face their biggest fear yet, and one that will test friendships and rattle nerves, when they each have to answer twenty multiple-choice questions about the Mole's identity and movements, with the person who achieves the lowest score in the quiz being the first to be terminated.
The eleven remaining contestants are divided into three teams. One team is sent to three locations along the headland near Middle Head with the job of visually communicating clues to another team in a speedboat on Sydney Harbour, while the final team have to decipher the clues that the team in the speedboat have written. They then travel to Melbourne, where their abilities to communicate are again put to the test when they are divided into two teams guided by a navigator, and each have to search buildings in the city for clues that will lead them to Shura's location. ...
The ten remaining contestants have to search the iconic bathing boxes on Brighton Beach for some treasure. A psychologically intense game of trust played in the State Library of Victoria exposes and destroys some allegiances, with some people playing for the group, others playing for their alliances and still others playing for themselves.
The contestants travel to Wreck Beach, on the Great Ocean Road, for a challenge that puts their honesty to the test. A past challenge comes back to haunt them when they least expect it when one contestant holds the fates of the others, before the next quiz leads to the contestant who gets the lowest score being the third to be terminated.
The nine remaining contestants are split early in the morning, with seven of them given the task of finding the other two, who can only give answers of Yes or No to the searchers' questions, using a mobile phone with limits on the numbers and duration of calls allowed. They are then divided into two teams and set the task of guessing which celebrity the other team has formed a pixelated image of.
The devil is in the detail when the contestants face an observations challenge that could lead to concentration or confusion. Some contestants go rogue when they swing for each other down a zip line. They then meet Shura at Flemington Racecourse, where they sit their next quiz. As they gaze on the Melbourne Cup, one of them will fall at the final hurdle when they score the lowest in the quiz and become the fourth person to be terminated.
The contestants meet Shura in Sydney's western suburbs, where they are given one shot at an archery target with a bow and arrow, with the person closest to the bullseye winning an Exemption from the next quiz and the opportunity to read and take pictures of another person's Mole Diary. When the three contestants holding Exemptions have to defend them in a paintball skirmish, one of them tries to deal their way out of trouble.
The contestants face their fears in their toughest challenge yet when they face the prospect of abseiling forwards down a 14 storey silo. They then make their way to the Sydney National Art School for a challenge involving dominoes that will boggle their minds. One contestant will get caught in the domino effect after they sit their next quiz, when they fall as a result of getting the lowest score and being terminated.
The seven remaining contestants make their way north to Queensland's Gold Coast, where they meet Shura Taft for some challenges inspired by the local iconic surf lifesavers, but they find that their teamwork isn't running on track. The new Treasurer discovers that someone has pinched some money from the pot, but who really is to blame? The contestants are then tested like never before when they go back to school.
The group meet at the Skyhome at Peppers Broadbeach for a high stakes card game. Will they quit while they are ahead? The contestants need speed to win their next challenge, where some of them defend their Exemptions in the classic card game of Memory while others race to unfurl flags for money. There's trouble on the high seas when some people get lost in the Gold Coast's canals during a navigation challenge.
The seven contestants meet Shura for a silent auction that turns out to be the most devastatingly psychological challenge yet, where they bid for game-changing items with money out of the pot. They then find themselves snorkelling among sharks at the iconic Sea World theme park.
Having survived snorkelling with the sharks, one contestant is about to be bitten when they sit the next quiz, with the contestant that scores the lowest being terminated. For the six remaining contestants, it's all aboard the Mole Express for a test of their general knowledge, and they have to perform what appears to be a miracle when they walk on water to reach a mystery box.
