'Mythbusters' Looks at 'Star Wars' Science

6 September 2015 5:49 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Before Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage starred in their hit Discovery Channel series MythBusters, they worked in special effects on movies like The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. While their MythBusters episodes often tackle general tropes shown in movies and TV, they also tackle specific franchises and shows, such as Jaws, The Simpsons and Breaking Bad, just to name a few. Last night's episode delved into the Star Wars franchise, and today we have a few clips from the episode.

The episode comes at the perfect time for Star Wars fans, following the global release of new Star Wars: The Force Awakens toys and merchandise during Force Friday this weekend. While Saturday's MythBusters episode doesn't specifically tackle anything from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, since there is still little we know about the story, but these clips below will surely be of interest to any Star Wars fan. »

Video of the Day: Watch a supercut of various robot depictions in film

19 August 2015 8:00 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Robots have been a staple on the big screen for many decades, showing up as far back as Fritz Lang’s 1927 classic Metropolis and as recently as Alex Garland’s 2015 film Ex Machina. With numerous depictions of robots have come numerous ideas of what they look like, what they’re capable of, whether they’re good or evil, and other such concerns.

Now vimeo user Mennomail has made a mashup of the various robotic representations on the big screen over the years. The video is set to both Fractals by Monea Music and Ich Will by Rammstein, and highlights both the similarities and differences in how robots have been depicted by various filmmakers. Mennomail also released a list of films from which scenes appear, which is as follows:

Films used (in alphabetical order)

1. Automata (2014)

2. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

3. Artificial Intelligence: AI (2001)

4. Alien (1979)

5. Aliens (1986)

6. Bicentennial Man (1999)

Jada Pinkett Smith was born in Baltimore, and was raised by her mother and grandmother. After graduating from the Baltimore School for the Arts – where she majored in dance and theatre – she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Directors' Trademarks: The Wachowskis

19 May 2015 4:05 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

At least once a month, Cinelinx will chose a director for an in-depth examination of the “signatures” that they leave behind in their work. This month we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Andy and Lana Wachowski working collectively as the directing team known as "The Wachowskis".

The Wachowskis originally were comic book writers before they began writing film scripts. They were offered an opportunity to write and direct a feature film, which became 1996’s Bound. That film received good critical reviews and showcased the Wachowskis as an innovative directing team. Their next film was The Matrix, which became a critical and commercial hit in 1999. That success lead to two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, both released in 2003. Next, they took their love for comic books and graphic novels and wrote V For Vendetta (2006), which became another commercial and critical hit. Although they did not direct this film, »

Keanu Classic: The Matrix

3 April 2015 5:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

We at Thn collectively love Keanu Reeves and have been immensely excited about his return this year in John Wick. Although not released in UK cinemas until April, Thn have been lucky enough to have already seen it and we can tell you that it is all kinds of awesome.

John Wick was so brilliant that it has awoken my long-forgotten admiration for Mr Reeves and compelled me to revisit his extensive back catalogue immediately. Having spent my evening post screening ordering an alarming amount of Keanu Reeves films, both good and bad – Henry’S Crime anyone? I realised that my schoolgirl crush was far from over. Reeves is exceptionally handsome yes, but he also seems like such a nice, genuine guy. Recent interview appearances for John Wick revealed that he has a very down-to-Earth nature and that he doesn’t take himself, or life to seriously. He has also »

A List of Records ‘Fifty Shades’ Broke This Weekend at Box Office

15 February 2015 11:43 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fifty Shades of Grey” torched record books this weekend, debuting to a white hot $81.7 million domestically and $239.7 million globally.

By introducing moviegoers to little-explored sections of the Kama Sutra, Universal Pictures’ erotic romance became the highest-grossing Presidents Day Weekend opener. It also established new benchmarks for R-rated fare.

Not shabby for a film that cost $40 million to produce before factoring in promotional and distribution costs. Sam Taylor-Johnson directed the film, with Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in the lead roles. Sequels to the picture have yet to earn a greenlight, but given the results, that appears to be a formality.

Here’s a look at some of the records that got incinerated thanks to Christian Grey’s smoldering glare.

‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Earns Massive $158 Million at Foreign Box Office

15 February 2015 11:10 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fifty Shades of Grey” is a hit in almost any language.

The bigscreen adaptation of E.L. James’ look at a billionaire and the bondage fetish that ties him to a college journalist scored with $158 million at the foreign box office. That massive figure came from 9,637 locations in 58 territories — essentially every point on the globe where Valentine’s Day is celebrated.

Combined with the picture’s record-breaking Stateside debut, the film has earned $239.7 million worldwide. That’s a tidy sum for a film without any big-name stars and an economical $40 million production budget. It’s also the rare erotic film that attracted crowds at the multiplex, a feat it accomplished by focusing on the romantic elements that underlie its tale of Bdsm.

“Our release date strategy was really the perfect storm,” noted Nick Carpou, head of domestic distribution at Universal, the studio behind the film. “Our campaign gave people permission to see the film. »

The 10 Best Films Of 2003

22 January 2015 9:21 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With 2015 upon us, we figured it was a good time to look back on the movies the millennium has brought us. And so we've dug into the archives and are re-running our Best of the 2000s pieces, from way back in 2009 when the Playlist was a little Blogspot site held together with tape and string. Each list runs down the top 10 films of each year (it's possible that, half-a-decade on, we'd put them in a different order and even change some of the movies, but we wanted to preserve the original pieces untouched as far as possible). Check out 2000, 2001 and 2002 if you missed them, and today we continue with 2002. The original piece follows below, and thanks to staffers past and present who contributed. If sequels were the name of the game in 2002, things didn't change much in '03, as franchises began to curdle with disappointing new installments like "The Matrix Reloaded, »
