Latest 'Hur' Remake Gets a Loud, Bombastic Trailer for the Fast and Furious Crowd

'Ben-Hur' 2016 with Jack Huston: Chariot race to the death. 'Ben-Hur' 2016 trailer: 'Gladiator' meets 'Fast Seven' meets 'Star Wars' meets… Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer have released the trailer for their 2016 Ben-Hur remake (or reboot or readaptation) – a.k.a. Fast and Furious A.D., as one wag called it in an online comment. Instead of grandiose spectacle featuring at its core a “human” story with Christian overtones, this chariot-and-sandals epic is being sold as Gladiator meets Fast Seven meets Spartacus: Blood and Sand meets Star Wars – with Morgan Freeman's Sheik Ilderim as the Roman Empire's dreadlocked version of Alec Guinness' Ben Obi-Wan Kenobi. Say what you will, the trailer-makers sure know their target audience. And that's not the same crowd that would go check out what's usually referred to in the U.S. media as “faith” (i.e., Christian) movies. One assumes that particular audience segment will be getting »

'Deadpool' Overtakes 'Iron Man' and 'Man of Steel' at the Box Office

14 March 2016 12:14 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Long before Deadpool's February 12 release, fans knew that this would not be your conventional superhero movie. In a comic book landscape dominated by PG-13 fare, the R-rated adventure's success is nothing short of extraordinary. Over the weekend, as the superhero movie celebrated its "monthiversary," Deadpool surpassed another box office milestone, crossing $700 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

The superhero movie has taken in just over $328 million domestically, and over $380 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $708.1 million, from just a $58 million budget. The movie has already become the highest-grossing movie domestically in 20th Century Fox's X-Men franchise, and it will likely pass X-Men: Days of Future Past's franchise-best worldwide tally of $747.9 million in the near future. While this movie isn't a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it's still outgrossed most of those movies so far, even with the restrictive R rating.

How 'The Witch' Got Backing from Chris and Eleanor Columbus's Maiden Voyage

19 February 2016 3:46 PM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Sometimes people discover something that feels good and it changes their lives. Take Chris Columbus ("Home Alone," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"). For five years at Nyu he worked closely with Richard Vague on their Columbus Vague Awards. "We'd fly into New York once a year and read scripts from the grad and undergrad film department," he told me in a phone interview, "meet students who pitched ideas, and award money from the school to help them make their first feature." Columbus didn't have much contact with the filmmakers after that but he'd track their progress and see such films as Dee Rees's "Pariah" get into Sundance with Spike Lee as executive producer. "I said, 'wait a second. I should be doing this in line with my company 1492, and create a company to help first time filmmakers find financing.'" So with his Nyu Film & TV grad daughter Eleanor, »

"Harry Potter" To Get Concerts For Each Film

17 February 2016 9:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

CineConcerts is partnering with Warner Brothers Consumer Products to launch a series of film concert tours based on the "Harry Potter" franchise.

Dubbed "The Harry Potter Film Concert Series," the orchestral concert experience will kick off with a tour for "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" later this year. Each film will be reformated so audiences will be able to experience a live symphony orchestra performance of the entire score in-sync with the film, which will be simultaneously projected onto a high-definition 40-foot screen.

CineConcerts President Justin Freer says: "Original dialogue and sound effects will be kept intact. All the music is pulled out of the film, so that's one of the interesting challenges - mixing the live music against the dialogue and the effects."

The series begins June 23rd in Philadelphia ahead of a North American tour. No word on an international rollout at this point.
