Directors UK appoints chair

Steve Smith replaces Beryl Richards on UK organisation’s board.

Directors UK, the professional association for British screen directors, has appointed Steve Smith as the new chair of its board.

Smith replaces the outgoing Beryl Richards, who is stepping down after two and a half years in the post.

He steps up from the role of vice chair, which he has been in for two years.

Smith is a director whose career in television has included stints on The Graham Norton Show on the BBC, as well as The New Paul O’Grady Show and Da Ali G Show.

Richards is departing after reaching the maximum term length of six years on the board.

During her tenure, she spearheaded campaigns on issues such as gender, diversity, pay, copyright and on the importance of training and career development for directors.

The next two episodes will consider the legacies of Marx and Hayek, but tonight it's the turn of John Maynard Keynes. Flanders argues that we are living through the supreme test of Keynes's core belief: that the best way for a broke nation to stimulate growth is to spend yet more of the money it doesn't have. Keynes also bequeathed the supreme caution against overly utopian economic planning: "In the long run," he observed, "we are all dead." Andrew Mueller

Landau, Jones have 'Evidence' for ABC
Oscar winner Martin Landau and Orlando Jones have been tapped to star in the ABC drama pilot Evidence. In other pilot casting news, Chyler Leigh has joined Fox's Reunion, Aimee Garcia has come onboard Fox's untitled Bill Chais/Jeff Rake project, Ernest Waddell and Penn Badgley have been cast in the untitled Tom Fontana/Julie Martin drama for the WB Network, while NBC has tapped a quartet for the untitled comedy presentation from Da Ali G Show exec producer Dan Mazer. Evidence, from John Wells Prods. and Warner Bros. TV, is a character-based procedural drama following two homicide detectives (Landau, Jones) who investigate murders by putting all of the evidence together and then constructing the crime.

VIVA adds non-music fare to 'more grown-up' sked

BERLIN -- In an attempt to catch up to market leader MTV in Germany, Cologne-based music channel VIVA unveiled a new program offensive Thursday that will see the group copy MTV's strategy of supplementing its regular diet of video clips with comedy and animation shows. Program highlights in the new VIVA schedule will be HBO's Da Ali G Show and animated series South Park, from Comedy Central. VIVA also will open up slots for shows produced by its subsidiary Brainpool, including Internet-themed talk show elton.tv.
