'Ocean's Eight' Adds Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and More, Plus: How It Connects to 'Ocean's Eleven'

We love it when a good plan comes together, especially when that plan involves a heist and a fantastic ensemble. You may have heard about Ocean's Eight, a spinoff of the Ocean's movies, including Ocean's Eleven, Ocean's Twelve and Ocean's Thirteen, that revolves around an all-female cast. That cast features Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett as its two leads (similar to the way George Clooney and Brad Pitt headed the other Ocean's movies), and now we've learned that they will be joined by Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and the Asian-American rapper Awkwafina, the latter of whom recently costarred in Neighbors 2 for those not as familiar with her work. She's also well known for her comedy videos on YouTube. And yes...

How tonight's 'Mr. Robot' briefly turned into another show – in a good way

10 August 2016 8:11 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

A review of tonight's Mr. Robot coming up just as soon as I give Alf four... "I'm never going to leave you. Promise." -Edward Alderson "Master Slave" is essentially two distinct episodes of Mr. Robot mashed together, starting off with a long and unusual Elliot/Mr. Robot sequence, then turning into a caper movie revolving around Angela and Darlene. had you told me last season that an episode would have had such a clear split, I would have assumed the Elliot half was the more exciting part, and that Angela teaming up with fsociety was just something to keep the supporting actors busy to avoid working Rami Malek to death. Instead, the caper plot was the episode's clear winner, while Elliot mental journey into '90s family sitcom-land was a fun idea that (like a lot of this season) arguably ran too long, before paying off well in the end. »

Ocean's 8: Hathaway, Rihanna, Kaling And More Ladies Join Cast

10 August 2016 1:30 PM, PDT | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Deadline reported this morning that actors Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Helen Bonham Carter and musical entertainers Rihanna and Awkwafina will join Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett in Gary Ross' Ocean's Eleven spin-off Ocean's 8 (or Ocean's Ocho).  The female driven caper spin off  will add one more leading lady to the cast and consider the possibilities of cameos from any of the previous versions. Steven Soderbergh will produce a script written by Ross and newcomer scribe Olivia Milch. With the recent news of a female-led Summer blockbuster falling short thus a sequel not likely to happen (no doubt the vigorous bullying and campaigning against that film had some effect) does the news of a female-led Oceans spin-off destroy anyone's childhoods? The door is that way. ...

Yes, 'Ocean's 8' is really happening. Here's updated casting news.

10 August 2016 11:43 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Warner Bros. says the female-led Ocean's 8 will start filming in October, and they've lined up an interesting cast. But could they not find three more actors? Directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), the film is being produced by Ocean’s Eleven director Steven Soderbergh with a script from Ross and Olivia Milch. We actually don't  know much at this point how the film itself will play out but Deadline reports on the latest casting news: Aside from the previously identified Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, deals are close with Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina. The latter is the hip hop moniker of Asian American rapper and actress Nora Lum, who most recently had a role in Neighbors 2. And yes, you didn't miscount, that's only seven actors. They'd still need one more to make their title true unless George Clooney is going to jump back in. »

Ocean's Eleven Female-Driven Spinoff Ocean's Eight Rounds Out Cast, Gets October Start Date

Mindy Kaling, Anne Hathaway, and Rihanna.

In the tradition of Ghostbusters, Hollywood looks to be turning another franchise into a female-driven one -- Ocean's Eleven. This time around, the Ocean in question will be played by  Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock. However, unlike with Ghostbusters, Ocean's Eight will not be set in a different universe as the 2001 George Clooney film, but will take place within the same one.

It's been almost a year since the idea of this film has been announced, and in that time, the studio has rounded out most of the cast, and set a start date, Deadline reports. Here's who we'll have joining the illustrious eight:

With Ghostbusters launched as a successful all-female franchise for Sony, Warner Bros. is moving full-steam ahead on it's girl-centric Ocean's Eleven reboot. Titled Ocean's Eight and headlined by Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, this quasi-sequel will begin shooing in October in New York. Gary Ross will direct.

The caper thriller will feature some of today's leading actresses in secondary roles as they pull off the heist of a lifetime. Previously announced actresses Helena Bonham Carter and Mindy Kaling will now be joined by Anne Hathaway, singer Rihanna and Asian American rapper and actress Nora Lum, who many know better as Awkwafina.
