An eye-opener for everyone who thinks Wallace was an all-out racist., 17 March 2002
Author: Marcel de Vries ( from Den Haag, Holland

George Wallace: Settin' the Woods on Fire (GW:SWF) does a great job in telling the truth about George Wallace. For many still believe Wallace to be an American version of Hitler those people need to see this documentary.

You can almost not believe what you hear when people (also black civil rights leaders) have to say about him. And then ask yourself how did this man become a lightning rod for controversy and how did he chatter himself into doing what he did?

By no means will I try to justify what Wallace has done but his legacy, as portrayed in GW:SWF is far greater than that. Popular programs for the poor paid for by taxes on the rich, you could argue that Wallace was to the left of McGovern weren't it for his stance on civil rights and the Vietnam war!

Furthermore he might have been president had he not been paralyzed, and Pat Buchanan offers us an explanation why he thinks that Jimmy Carter (who was also a segregationist governor - of Georgia -) would in such a case never have been president.

All in all worth seeing, and the conclusion is that things aren't always like they seem or like we want them to be.
