A Fairly Lively Miniature Feature
23 February 2005 | by (Ohio) – See all my reviews

This very short feature tells a very simple story, but it's a fairly lively miniature with a good energy level, and it has the appearance of being relatively well-crafted. Like so many films of its long-past era, the surviving print is less than ideal, and this obscures some of the action - but that can hardly be held against those who originally made the movie.

The story starts out with a man planning an "Elopement on Horseback" with his fiancée. He has also brought along a friend to help him deal with the opposition that he expects to receive. The scene seems to have been composed with some forethought, as the horse and the characters move in and out of the fixed camera frame without, for the most part, getting tangled up or prematurely moving out of the picture.

Although it doesn't have enough story or special techniques to be of interest to anyone who is not already keenly interested in the earliest films, it's not bad for its time.
