Now Deepa Mehta's brother makes documentary on Indian widows

1 May 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | From Bollywoodworld.com | See recent BollywoodWorld news

Mumbai, Inspired by Deepa Mehta's Oscar-nominated film "Water", her brother Dilip Mehta has done a documentary on the lives of widows from across India and says unlike his sibling he didn't face any problem in making it. Entitled "The Forgotten Woman", the documentary moves from the dying derelict widows of Varanasi to the young widows of the soldiers who died in the 1999 Kargil war. " 'Water' certainly galvanised me to make this feature length documentary. The inspiration came entirely from the widows themselves," Dilip, whose documentary was screened at the Dubai International Film Festival in December last year, told Ians. In 2000, when Deepa planned to shoot the plight of abandoned widows in Vrindavan and Varanasi, radical political activists ...

Akshay Kumar will grow his beard to play Sikh in Deepa Mehta's film

28 April 2009 2:38 AM, PDT | From BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news

After the furor that was raised over the apology of a beard that Akshay Kumar sported as a Sikh in Anees Bazmee's Singh Is Kinng, Akshay Kumar is taking no chances. For the role of the real-life Sardarji who sailed in the fateful ship named Kamagata Maru from Hong Kong to Vancouver in 1914, Akshay is taking no chances. He'll grow the beard to the size stipulated by the Sikh community before plunging into the role in January 2010. In fact the actor, smarting under the attack he faced for his improper beard length in Bazmee's bearded burlesque, has this time decided to set aside all his assignments for Kamagata Maru to avoid continuity clashes with other projects. Says Deepa, "Akshay is so amazing. Considering he has so much work on hand, I was surprised when he absolutely insisted on growing a full-length beard. One of the reasons I postponed Kamagata

26 April 2009 10:31 PM, PDT | From Bollywoodworld.com | See recent BollywoodWorld news

Mumbai, She had shaved her head for Deepa Mehta's "Water" though she wasn't in the final film that released, and had put on a lot of weight to look like a madame in a brothel for Shyam Benegal's "Mandi". Now veteran actress Shabana Azmi has once again put on 25 kg for Gurinder Chaddha's "It's A Wonderful Afterlife". "Yes, you've heard right. I have put on 25 kg and I'm waddling around unrecognisable to all except those who know who I am," Shabana told Ians over phone from London. Hugely overweight, Shabana is said to be having the time of her life playing a hysterical Punjabi woman in the movie. In fact, those who saw Shabana at the Filmfare Awards were wondering what on earth was wrong with her. But Shabana had begun preparing for her part ...

Real life battered wife asks Deepa Mehta for ample coverage and moolah

25 March 2009 2:33 AM, PDT | From BollywoodHungama | See recent BollywoodHungama news

Whose life is it anyway? Every time a bio-pic is attempted, the real-life figure decides to step into the picture at the last minute with a long list of demands. So it has happened with Deepa Mehta's Heaven On Earth. The real-life wife Amandeep Kaur, the wife from Punjab who became a victim of spousal abuse after marriage in Toronto, and on whose story of domestic violence Heaven On Earth (Hoe) is partly based decided months before release that she needed to have more prominence in the film's publicity. Aghast at the turn of events as this kind of one-woman marketing monopoly was never part of Deepa's creative strategy for a film on domestic violence, the adamant director knocked off all mention of Amandeep from the film and advised Preity Zinta who plays the protagonist and other members of the cast to not make any mention of a woman called a Aman.

New Delhi, Theatre has been his life for 16 years but Vansh Bhardwaj says he couldn't have asked for a better entry into films than Deepa Mehta's "Videsh", which he calls his "dream debut". "This is my first film and I'm so fortunate that I got to share screen space with Preity Zinta and work with one of the best directors in the movie business. This is truly a dream debut," said Vansh. The producers are Echo Lake’s Doug Mankoff, Mike Marcus and Andy Spaulding, along with Peter Block, the former Lionsgate president who recently formed the production company A Bigger Boat.

The Necessities of Life (Canada's Submission for Oscar)

21 January 2009 8:51 AM, PST | From FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news

James Hansen here from Out 1 continuing my reports/reviews of some of the films on the Best Foreign Language Film shortlist.

Canadian filmmakers not named Denys Arcand have never done well at the Academy Awards. Since the Foreign Film Oscar has been awarded, Canada has been nominated four times; three of the four films have been directed by Arcand. Canada won the award for Arcand’s The Barbarian Invasions in 2003, were nominated in 2006 for Deepa Mehta's Water, and Oscar finally snubbed Arcand last year for Days of Darkness. We should all hope this trend of "snubs" continues with Canada’s submission this year, recently picked up by IFC Films, Benoit Pilon’s The Necessities of Life – a classically egregious piece of Oscar bait. Much to my chagrin and dismay, Canada is on the cusp of a nomination for the film, which only further entrenches the proof inadequacy of the Foreign Language Film committee.

One ‘Jaane Tu yaa…jaane na’ changed a whole lot of things for Imran Khan. Now Aamir’s nephew who’s yet to display his versatility is being considered for a literary role as well.

Imran is being considered for Salman Rushdie’s Booker prize winning book ‘Midnight’s Children’.

And the role too is big - that of the book’s telepathic protagonist in the movie version.

Deepa Mehta whose ‘Water’ was nominated for the Oscars is going to direct the film. She’s is set to finalize the movie’s cast with the help of.

14 January 2009 10:30 AM, PST | From GlamSham | See recent GlamSham news

Shilpa Shetty's long and luscious tresses may soon go. Buzz is that she will soon go the Shabana-Nandita way. The two actresses had shaved off their hair for Deepa Mehta's Water. It's another matter that Water never got made with them. Shilpa will start shooting for her most challenging role in Malayalam director, R Sarath's English language film The Desire this week. Apparently a part of the film requires her to shave off her hair....
