Storyline

Over the spring of 2000, sixteen average Americans (divided into two tribes which eventually merge into one) were sequestered on the deserted island of Pulau Tiga for 39 days. For their stay, they must learn to live as a tribe, although eventually, it is everyone for themselves. They compete in challenges for "luxuries" (a barbecue, a phone call home, etc.) and immunity. Every three days, the losers of the latter challenges must face tribal council, where they will account for their actions by voting one person off of the island. At the end of day 39, there will be only one survivor left who will leave the island with one million dollars. Based on the Swedish game show, "Operation Robinson." Written by ZeroG1

The third entry in the highly popular reality series is actually pretty good!
12 October 2001 | by (Providence, Rhode Island) – See all my reviews

I watched the premiere of SURVIVOR: AFRICA last night and I was very impressed. I wouldn't say that I had tired of the SURVIVOR series because I was rather excited to watch this, but I was thinking that perhaps there would be signs in the premiere of SURVIVOR: AFRICA that the series was getting a bit tired.

I was proven wrong. I found myself intrigued with the group of cast-a-ways yet again, already picking out favorites and people that I didn't really like. Although it was just the episode setting out the groundwork for the future episodes, such as setting up camp, making fire and finding water, I was very intrigued especially with the networking between the team members and their reaction to dealing with dehydration and not having any water.

Furthermore, I found myself sympathizing with one team member especially, Clarence, after he is criticized and martyred for eating some beans from a can that he offered to a fellow team member who was dehydrated. I felt very sorry for him after watching the whole team rain down on him and I was very angry watching another team member, Tom, who made him repeatedly apologize to the other team members like a common dog. For this alone, I hope Clarence makes it far into the game. He is suffering from 'Kel' syndrome from the SURVIVOR: AUSTRALIA series. The whole team turned on him after a questionable rumor broke out and he never got the chance to redeem his self-respect after that incident. In this case, Clarence was not the one who got voted out after the first Tribal Council meeting, and for that alone, this game should get very interesting.

My rooting though goes for the team of Samburu, simply because there are more likeable people on the team and for the fact that they were smart enough to create fire first.

I'm sure there will be many surprises and twists and turns ahead for this series, and I will be there watching each and every one of them when they all happen!

This show gets a big thumbs up from me!
