"Magpie" was created by Thames Television in 1968 as a "more accessible" rival to the BBC's children's show Blue Peter (1958). It had a more hip image and focused on pop music and fashion trends.

The show's theme song was based on a children's nursery rhyme, which stems from an old English superstition regarding a flock of magpies. The number of magpies in the flock was thought to correspond to a particular fortune or omen: "One for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl, four for a boy..." etc.

Around 1000 episodes were made over the course of the series. Less than a hundred are currently known to survive in full - though some film inserts have been discovered on a tape which purported to hold a September 1974 edition.

In the very first show viewers got to see a balloon ascent that had gone wrong. Susan Stranks was the presenter involved in the stunt but emerged safe and well with just a cut lip.
