Nicolas Cage - back on top

17 May 2010 2:53 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Back on a roll following Kick-Ass and now Bad Lieutenant, few actors have had as many ups and downs as Nicolas Cage. 'People who do the wrong thing win,' he tells Damon Wise

Until recently, things weren't looking so good for Nicolas Cage. In the 90s he transformed from a geeky, twitchy presence in soft dramas like Moonstruck and Peggy Sue Got Married into the oddest action hero of all time. Unlike Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Cage was a true livewire, a psychotic, tender presence who could kick ass even while being a doting father; who could forget him brawling to the death for the sake of his son's soft toy in 1997's Con Air ("Put the bunny back in the box!"). Cage was something mainstream moviegoers and indie mavens could agree on, a soldier for hire who could be put to service by David Lynch in one of his dark, »

Aussies ready Simpson and Red Dog!

11 May 2010 9:33 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

When Aussies make films about animals they tend to be of the wild, predatory, terrorising variety, scaring people with sharks (The Reef), crocodiles (Black Water, Rogue) wild pigs (Razorback), or an entire, terrifying ecosystem (Long Weekend).

So it's with some surprise and apprehension that we have news of two new Australian films in about a donkey and the other about a dog.

Encore is reporting that The Kings of Mykonos director Peter Andrikidis will direct Simpson, about a man and his donkey on the battlefields of World War I. No doubt it will be a much bigger war story, using this tale as the story backbone.

It sounds a lot like Steven Spielberg's upcoming War Horse, but is in fact based on a famous Australian story about a stretcher bearer who carried the wounded on his donkey during the battle at Gallipoli, in Turkey.

Penelope Cruz Caught In Stranger Tides

10 February 2010 1:37 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Ahoy! Aaaargh! Pieces of eight! Savvy, etc… Just trying to get you in the right buccaneer mood for news that Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It’s somewhat of a surprising bit of casting info, given that you wouldn’t normally expect to see Cruz cropping up in such a hefty tent pole, and especially since her “bigger” films have tended to be the mis-firing likes of Captain Corelli's Mandolin Gothika, Sahara. Oh, and a voice on G-Force.But as those titles suggest, she doesn’t always swim in indie waters and with her Nine director – the man who helped her score her latest Oscar nomination – Rob Marshall at the helm for this next Pirates adventure, plus what sounds like a meaty role written as an equal/foil to Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, you can see why she might dive in. »

Terrence Malick Casts Bale, Bardem & McAdams in Romance

3 February 2010 2:09 PM, PST | | See recent news »

Though the legendary filmmaker has only directed a handful of feature films, Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line) has quite a respectful following. With his most recent film, The Tree of Life starring Sean Penn and Brad Pitt, in post-production, Malick is already gearing up for his next project as Deadline Hollywood reports he has grabbed Christian Bale, Javier Bardem(No Country for Old Men), Rachel McAdams (Sherlock Holmes), and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) to star in an untitled romance that he has written and will direct later this year. Literally no story details have surfaced anywhere on the internet yet. This is quite an impressive gathering of talent for a romance that is currently only described as a "powerful and moving love story." But none of these actors are strangers to romance with films like Captain Corelli's Mandolin (Bale), Vicky Christina Barcelona (Bardem), The Notebook (McAdams), and Paris »
