Storyline

Sonic the Hedgehog and his sidekicks Tails and Knuckles the Echidna are determined to thwart a plan that would turn their Land of the Sky into the equivalent of The Land of Darkness, which lurks beneath the surface (and is obviously the former planet Earth). So they plow through to the center of the planet and the ancient city of Robotropolis (the former New York City?) to do righteous battle. The big question of the day is whether the usually evil Dr. Robotnik is telling the truth for once or sending the good guys into a trap. Written by Anthony Pereyra {hypersonic91@yahoo.com}

A great piece for Sonic fans. Maybe not for everyone else, but...
13 May 2004 | by (North America) – See all my reviews

When Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie first appeared on video in the US, I felt intrigued to check it out, being a big fan of anime and the blue hedgie himself. I left it on the shelf however, because the video was an English dub only and I had a feeling that the English version would be horrible (and I turned out to be right). Now, years later, I found a DVD of the movie ($12.95--Cheap!! Though I'm sure I could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else), and I'm not sorry in the least I spent that money.

I'll start by saying that yes, the English voices are absolutely despicable. If you can, get the DVD which thankfully includes the Japanese voice track which is a much more enjoyable experience. Secondly, as I found out later this is not actually a movie, but a two part OAV (or OVA) which was released as two video episodes in Japan but combined into one feature for the US release. You won't see any exceptional theatrical quality animation here, but if you like anime you won't find this a problem at all.

As for the movie itself... no, it doesn't have a brilliant plot. Yes, it has little to no character development. Yes, some characters seem a little off compared to more recent sonic games and anime, especially Knuckles, who doesn't have that "rival" additude from Sonic X (in fact he even claims to be Sonic's 'best friend' in one point of the film). But I don't think that's what Sega was aiming for with this movie-- It wasn't made to compel you with story, it was made to provide you with slapstick comic humor with just a smidgen of drama starring everyone's favorite hedgehog, and for a sonic fan like me, it's a mission accomplished.
