Anybody remember the Canadian produced Flash Gordon series that came out in the 90s? Starring the voice of the actress (Lexa Doig) who plays Rommie in Andromeda? Well, the DVD "Marooned on Mongo" looks like somebody cut together the first few episodes into a movie and released it as a 'feature'. They used to do the same thing with the Flash Gordon serials which starred Buster Crabbe.
Here, Flash Gordon is a skaterboi who tags along with Dale Arden because fighting galactic evil is, like, a total rush, Dood. Ultimate board sport, Brah... Shudder, cringe.
I watched most of the series episodes and to be fair there were several halfway decent ones. But the continuous kowtowing to board rat cultism was pretty trying. Fer sherr... And as a feature, the 'episodes' don't thread all that well narratively, making the final product look less like a single feature and more like what it is: a compilation of series episodes. The series of episodes should have been released to DVD in that form, rather than as some half-disguised 'feature' that didn't fool anybody. That said, there is some pretty decent looking background art on display as Flash and Dale explore the alien ships and landscapes of Mongo. Worth watching for its 90s animation look and pretty good action animation as well.
