Nothing had prepared me for this visual feast. The cinematographer's eye for sheen and subtle detail, combined with an exceptionally photogenic cast and an enveloping soundscape, allowed this movie to transcend its genre handily. The yarn is thin and some of the characters thinner still; yet the production's hard-edged beauty, rendered faithfully on DVD, makes for a memorable experience.
