Mindless but effective and great fun slasher
22 December 2007 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Happy Hell Night came at an age where the slasher movie was dying, giving out its last breath before vanishing for a few years and only re-emerging in hollow mockeries like the Scream pictures (I like them as comedy thrillers but they ain't horror) or sporadically entertaining losers like Venom or The Pool. I thus watched it with great hopes that it would prove a dignified entry into the tail end of slash cinema and my hopes were repaid considerably. In fact, I was enjoying it so much ten minutes in that I started on a bottle of wine and I now can't recall all of the movies details, but enough to write this comment. The films biggest asset is a really creepy killer. He looks and sounds truly demonic and the film is utterly gripping whenever he's around. The killing is more than acceptable, perhaps not particularly inventive but with plenty of good honest bloody stabbing, slicing and cutting. The kills are often tense too because of the freaky killer. The plotting and pacing are just above average for this kind of film. Times had clearly changed since mindless Eighties slasher heaven, so the killer gets a good back story, the film has a few locations instead of just one, and the script and acting are slightly more convincing than usual. There is some unwelcome generic teen obnoxiousness, but not enough to derail the movie, and there is some fun gratuitous nudity. All in all this is a fresh, fun and satisfying mindless slasher, one of the last good'uns before the genre pretty much went down the toilet
