If only Haseena Parkar didn’t suffer from the curse of a clunky, inept, shoddy central performance, it would have been a far more watchable potboiler on gangsterism. And I use the word ‘potboiler’ with all due respect. It’s not easy to make a massy masala movie out of the mayhem and murkiness of the mafia kingdom.
Rahul Dholakia’s Raees earlier this year wedded crime and kitsch. Apoorva Lakhia does it with a fair share of elan and chutzpah. Haseena Parkar is about that Dubai-based gangster who allegedly ran his nefarious business activities in Mumbai through his sister in the 1990s.
The brother and the sister had themselves a blast.
Fortuitously, Lakhia doesn’t miss Da-wood for the trees.
The carefully charted journey of Haseena Parkar secretes enough enigma, mystery, intrigue, dread, uncertainty, fear and...

Commando 2
Starring Vidyut Jamwal, Freddy Daruwala, Adaah Sharma, Esha Gupta
Directed by Deven Bhojani
After a week of drudgery at the theatres when we were coaxed into wading through a self-designed epic slush on war and love, it is such a welcome relief to go to the theatres just to have a unpretentious good time. No offence meant. None taken.
Come, unwind with Vidyut Jamwal as he cracks some serious bones and Fera codes, brings India’s wealth back into the country and saves civilization from catastrophe. All done in the vein of a comic book hero who forgot his cape in transit.
Okay, Jamwal is ambitious, And sorry to say, he can’t act. He can fight like a wild untamed beast, though. His reflexes in the action scenes, specially in the hand-to-hand combat with actor Thakur Anoop Singh at the climax on the rooftop of skyscraper, are to die for.

Actor Sharman Joshi will now be seen in 1920 London, which is a sequel to the 1920 trilogy (after 1920, and 1920: Evil Returns). Acting opposite him is Meera Chopra, who has done several films in the Telugu and Tamil film industry.
While Sharman has been around in the industry, with films like 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti and Golmaal to his credit, for Meera Chopra, 1920: London is her big Bollywood break. “It’s a scary industry, and not easy to make it year. But after a year and a half, I finally got this film,” she says.
Sharman Joshi, however, comes from a theatre background. His father has been an actor, director and producer in Gujarati films, so it was a natural progression for him to get into the field.
“My first two films were like chalk and cheese: Godmother and Style. But over the years I have gotten quite realistic about my roles.

Mumbai, Jan 23: Raima Sen, who bears a strong resemblance to her late grandmother and legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, says initially filmmakers tried to portray her like her granny and it took her a long time to get out of her shadows.
"Initially, when I came into the industry, everyone would look at me in that funny way as if they were not seeing me, but someone else. When I was doing my first film 'Godmother', I'd be told to look into the camera in a certain way. It took me a while to realise they were seeing my grandmother in me," said Raima.
She feels that late filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh's "Chokher Bali".

There is something about the theatre of the absurd that brings on a volley of unwarranted nonsense in the filmmakers of this country.
Not this time. Fukrey is about an eclectic bunch of no-good students poised between a rapidly-receding adolescence and a reluctant manhood is far funnier, more intelligent sharply – enacted and deftly executed than the recent much-lauded Kai Po Che .
And yes, though the boys think and talk a lot about sex, there is a refreshing absence of double-meanings in the dialogues.
Amazing, no!
In hindsight both the screenplay and performances in Kai Po Che seem somewhat overrated. And I plead guilty to that crime of over-estimation. Fukrey with its inventive plot and wickedly dead-on characterizations is the kind of rare and precious comedy where the actors...

Bollywood poster boy Imran Khan toughened up his image to play the rugged hero in director Vishal Bhardwaj's forthcoming Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola, released through Twentieth Century Fox this Friday, January 11, 2013.
Bhardwaj (Omkara, Maqbool) requested Imran to completely get into the skin of his character Matru by immersing himself in the Haryana way of life. The actor spent a month with five Jhat (a North Indian caste) boys from Delhi to assimilate their language and mannerisms.
Imran had to change his body language and learn Haryanvi for the role. He had to eat with the Jhat boys, go shopping with them and only speak and respond in Haryanvi, not uttering a word of English for the whole month. Imran was mentored for the part by theatre maestro Nk Sharma, who runs the Delhi-based act 1theatre Group.

Sharman Joshi might not be the talk of tinsel town every day but the boy surely knows how to leave a mark. Since his debut in 1999, Sharman has done a variety of films. Though his films like Style or Excuse Me have been one of the “blink and you miss” kinds, Sharman has surely carved a niche for himself in the industry with movies like Godmother, Lajja and Life in a Metro. With brilliant performances in 3 Idiots and Rang De Basanti, Sharman Joshi has proved himself to be a brilliant and versatile actor.

An Open Forum was held on ‘The state of screen writing today’ on Day 7 of the 13th Mumbai Film Festival. The panel comprised Vinay Shukla, Saurabh Shukla, Abbas Tyrewala, Sagar Ballary, Dev Benegal and Atul Tiwari. The discussion was moderated by Atul Tiwari, who wrote dialogues for films like Droh Kaal and Mission Kashmir.
Vinay Shukla, writer-director who made Godmother (National Award for Best Feature Film 1999) blamed producers for the sorry state of screenwriting in India today. “Though every producer will tell you that script is the backbone of the film, they want something that is tried and tested.
