Apparently Warner Bros. Is Courting Star Trek Beyond Director Justin Lin To Helm Their Live-Action Akira Movie

9 hours ago | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

It looks like Warner Bros. are still determined to get that live-action take on Akira into production. Their planned adaptation of the classic manga/anime has been in and out of development in some form or another since way back in 2002, with the likes of Stephen Norrington, Gary Whitta, Albert Hughes, Ruairi Robinson, and Jaume Collet-Serra all attached to direct at various different times over the years. Despite fierce fan-backlash over the decision to relocate the story to the U.S. and "whitewash" the characters, former The Wrap editor Jeff Sneider reckons the studio are now courting Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond, The Fast and the Furious 3-6) to helm the project. That's all we have to go on for now - but do you guys think Lin is the right man for the job, or would you rather Akira stayed where it is in Development Hell? »

New Fast and Furious 8 Iceland Cars Revealed

23 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last week, Fast and Furious 8 took fans behind-the-scenes with a new Fast Fridays video that showcased several of the powerful and exotic cars used in the movie. Ever since production started on this high-octane sequel, the production has been giving fans sneak peeks at the sets and the cast as part of their #FastFridays tradition. Instead of a new video, though, today we get five new photos that feature some of the cars driven by main characters during the scenes set in Iceland.

We've previously seen some of these cars in a Fast Fridays video from Iceland earlier this month, but we didn't know who any of these cars belonged to. These new photos, which were posted on the franchise's Facebook, reveal that Dom (Vin Diesel) will be driving a bullet-riddled Dodge Charger, while Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) drives a Rally Fighter, Tej (Ludacris) rolls in a tank-like vehicle known as a Ripsaw, »

Blending genres in the hope of creating a pulse-pounding thriller, Category 5 is based on an original script penned by Cohen himself, with help from Scott Windhauser, Jeff Dixon, Anthony Fingleton, and Carlos Davis.

As we pointed out this morning, it’s been 15 years since The Fast and the Furious opened in theaters. Now the director of that first film in the franchise is capitalizing on that anniversary and announcing the casting for his new movie by invoking the street racing movie that launched what’s now a behemoth of a heist action franchise. “Coinciding with the 15 Year Anniversary of Rob Cohen’s 2001 blockbuster hit…” this press release begins. Maggie Grace (Taken, Lost) and Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) are joining Cohen’s Category 5. Here’s what the upcoming action-thriller is about:  Category 5 follows a team of tech hackers embarking on a $600 million robbery from a coastal U.S. Mint facility the same time a disastrous Category 5 storm is set to strike. The remaining people left in the deserted beach town are a meteorologist (Toby Kebbel), a treasury agent (Grace), and the »

How The Fast and the Furious Created Hollywood's Biggest Movie Empire

22 June 2016 4:00 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Let's all think about something for a second: One of Hollywood's biggest movie franchises of our current day is based off of a movie that boasts "I live my life a quarter-mile at a time" as its most iconic quote. Let that sink in. As we stand here today, on the 15th anniversary of the original The Fast and the Furious, it's known that by the time the year 2021 comes to a close, the Fast and the Furious empire will contain ten movies. Ten! That's arguably over 20 hours of drag racing, car crashes, shootouts, sex scenes, Miami-esque clubwear, ride or dies and so, so much Vin Diesel. As Stacey Snider Ascends at Fox, Hollywood Is in Turnaround

17 June 2016 9:44 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

At the 2014 New York Film Festival premiere of “Gone Girl,” Twentieth Century Fox Film Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos seemed visibly relieved to have Stacey Snider finally join the studio, after months of speculation that this capable executive would join him from DreamWorks. Now, almost two years later —and after a 25-year career at Fox —the studio has confirmed that Gianopulos’ contract will not be renewed after it expires on June 30, 2017, when he will graduate “upstairs” into an executive role at parent company 21st Century Fox.

This follows a transition for Snider that has not been smooth. While the veteran exec has the right mix of skills to run a studio (and did so at Universal with Ron Meyer), knows how to manage a team of executives, and how to develop, produce, and release movies that are smart and four-quadrant friendly, entering the Fox landscape proved to be a challenge. »

Fast and Furious 8 Video Tours a Very Expensive Car Collection

13 June 2016 5:38 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Ever since production started on Fast and Furious 8, the crew has been crrying out a tradition called Fast Fridays, where various members of the team give fans a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at the footage they've shot throughout the week. Today, the sequel decided to get the week off to a big start by unveiling a video that showcases a handful of the exotic and classic cars that will be used in the sequel. All of the cars seen in this video are valued at more than $17 million.

The video, which debuted on the franchise's Facebook page, features vehicle coordinator Dennis McCarthy, who gives us a glimpse at this incredible collection of cars. While we don't get to see any of these cars in action, Dennis McCarthy says in this 15-minute video that these vehicles will be used in a scene he describes as "automotive Valhalla." Perhaps we'll get a sneak peek at this scene in an upcoming Fast Fridays video. But we'll have to wait and see.

We have previously seen a number of cars in action from the Fast Fridays videos with an Iceland car chase and an epic zombie car stunt in Cleveland. Very little is known about the plot thus far, but hopefully we'll learn more as filming continues. If the brief videos that have surfaced from the set are any indication, this could very well be the biggest Fast & Furious movie yet.

The story will primarily take place in New York, with production set for the Big Apple, Atlanta and Russia. The crew has already shot in Cuba and Iceland. It is believed that the Cuba scenes will introduce fans to Dominic Torreto's Cuban family. It isn't known how long principal photography is scheduled to last on Fast & Furious 8, but we know this will be the first installment of the franchise's final trilogy. Universal has already set an April 19, 2019 release date for Fast & Furious 9, and the franchise closes out with Fast & Furious 10 on April 2, 2021.

F. Gary Gray, who directed last year's critical and commercial sensation Straight Outta Compton, is taking the helm on Furious 8, working from a script by Chris Morgan. The writer is responsible for penning every movie in the series, except for the first two, 2001's The Fast and the Furious and 2003's 2 Fast 2 Furious. Universal has already set an April 14, 2017 release date for Fast & Furious 8, and it currently has that date all to itself. But it will be hitting theaters one week after Warner Bros.' Going In Style remake and Sony's Smurfs: The Lost Village. Take a look at this new behind-the-scenes video from the Fast & Furious 8 set, and stay tuned for more on this sequel. »

Star Trek Beyond Has an Exhausted U.S.S. Enterprise Crew

12 June 2016 7:13 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the iconic Star Trek franchise, with Paramount helping to celebrate by releasing the highly-anticipated sequel Star Trek Beyond, in theaters July 22. While we don't know if any more footage will be released between now and then, stars Zoe Saldana (Uhura) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) recently shed new light on this latest adventure. We know this follow-up is set in the midst of the U.S.S. Enterprise's five-year mission, and it seems their work has taken quite the toll on these crew members.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with both Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto after their taping of last week's episode of Lip Sync Battle, where they shared new insight into the story. Zoe Saldana reveals that, when the plot picks up, the entire crew is just exhausted. Here's what she had to say about the crew needing a break.

"We're tired, we need time off, we've been working non-stop, and it's become like a machine where you kind of forget about yourself, but you need to go back home and nurture yourself and rest," she explains. "Life has a different journey for us, and instead of us having to go out and aid another population, another planet that has been the target of violence, we are the target, so this is very different. We are tested at the craziest level and not just our lives are tested, but our characters and our relationships are tested."

Zachary Quinto also teased that Spock will be facing some existential challenges in Star Trek Beyond. This iconic character will continue to grapple with his Vulcan roots, and he will finally realize the best path for him in this movie. Here's what the actor had to say below.

"(He) is in this existential moment in his life and at a crossroads between his obligation to his Starfleet and his Vulcan roots. His planet was destroyed and they're rebuilding, and he's trying to figure out where his energy is best directed to help other people. He comes into a new awareness of his own mortality for a number of reasons, and there's a lot of stuff that he's trying to figure out in this film. By the end, I think he realizes the best path for himself moving forward. We spend a lot of time with unusual compatriots, like Kirk [Chris Pine] and Chekov [Anton Yelchin], Sulu [John Cho] and Uhura, and Spock and Bones [Karl Urban]. All of us are working to find our way back to one another and to join forces in order to defeat our common adversary."

Star Trek Beyond is the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin ("The Fast and the Furious" franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In "Beyond," the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test. Zachary Quinto also reveals that Spock is trying to figure out his relationship with Uhura.

"Part of Spock's existential crisis is, does he need to be with a Vulcan? Uhura recognizes this, so they're not necessarily at the height of relationship bliss in this film, but they love each other deeply and they want each other to be happy, to be fulfilled, to serve their purpose, and to realize their potential. It's an ongoing relationship; I don't think that it's resolved necessarily in Star Trek Beyond. They're learning about each other as well and figuring out the best way for each of them to move forward. You'll have to see where it goes."

The film stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zo&#235 Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Chekov and Idris Elba as the new villain Krall. Directed by Justin Lin, the third film in the franchise series is produced by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci, Lindsey Weber and Lin; and executive produced by Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Tommy Harper. Based upon the Star Trek TV series created by Gene Roddenberry, the screenplay is written by Pegg & Doug Jung. Stay tuned for more on Star Trek Beyond as we get closer to the July 22 release date. »

Fast and Furious 8 Video Shows Off Craziest Car Stunt Yet

Hollywood Clings to Sequels Despite Diminishing Returns

7 June 2016 10:30 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

As the dismal performance of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” reminds us, movie sequels can be a dicey proposition. But there are about 30 notable franchise pictures slated for this year, of which a little more than a third had been released through May. Thirty-five percent of Q1 box office revenue came from sequels, but the number likely will rise later in the year, when most blockbusters come out.

Hollywood’s reliance on franchises has increased dramatically in the last 15 years. But box office data highlights the risk associated with pursuing endless sequels: A majority of franchises head downhill after the first movie.

Using data from Box Office Mojo, I categorized the top 100 films from each of the last 15 years, according to whether or not they were sequels (defined as movies in a franchise that aren’t the original, includingtraditional sequels, reboots, and remakes). The percentage of revenue »

Watch Fast and Furious 8 Pull Off Amazing Parking Garage Stunt

Earlier today, the latest #FastFridays video debuted from Fast and Furious 8, which showcased footage shot this week in Iceland, with star Tyrese Gibson and director F. Gary Gray. That video teased plenty of action-packed footage with snowy car chases and explosions, but it seems that the sequel is also pulling off a crazy stunt in Cleveland as well. New footage has surfaced from an unknown area of downtown Cleveland, which features a stunt that might be one of the franchise's craziest yet.
