One of best movie for kids
gshamsy-990-6565531 March 2011
I watched this movie when I was a child and loved every bit of it. It was fun, and best of all was Shammi Kapoor. It does not make much of a sense if you are an adult but believe me I was excited every time I saw it. It contains nearly every aspect of "Alif Laila" (thousand and one nights), and on big screen. It has a hero who has numerous problems, he is in love with a filthy rich girl, belongs to a rejected lowly class, has nothing to lose, is daring, cute (Rajesh Khanna) and jobless. The story contains a genie in a bottle, a damsel in distress, a villain boxer, poor mom and sister, a greedy father (this is Indian touch), a dev(evil genie), and an underworld. One cannot say that for other famous movies such as Disney's Aladin. If you are a kid who have heard stories of Genies and Ghouls, of Magic carpet and glorious heroes from your grandmother, you are bound to love it.

Today's Genie
alokc27 April 2007
This movie directed by Shammi Kapoor is meant for the kids. It has Rajesh Khanna the Super Star who finds the genie in Shammi Kapoor and then hilarious situations arise. The movie is entertaining but lacks a strong screenplay and a purpose. The music by R D Burman is good and some songs are remembered still. Shammi Kapoor is a great actor but his skills as a director are yet to be established. Bundelbaaz may not have been a success but is worth a watch - the kids will enjoy it and so will the parents. A must see for the fans of Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor. The CD/DVDs of this film are available and is worth a watch and would keep one busy for 3 hours.

One of The Best Genies I've Ever Seen !
elshikh414 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The idea of poor young man, who wants to achieve a lot of dreams, then finds the Aladdin lamp, with a nice genie in it that can fulfill wishes--is quite old. Basically, it's from the book of (One Thousand and One Nights) where a lot of the Arabian folk stories. The cinema, Arabian or else, was fascinated by that book's great imagination and wisdom. Therefore, too many movies were made about its stories, and on the top of them is Aladdin and his magical lamp. In this Indian version of it, some wonderful elements were added on the original, through making it as a musical comedy.

First of all, (Bundal Baaz)'s genie is so fat, so childish, so lovely, and wants nothing but the happiness of his "boss". In a very smart scene, we know that the genie was an orphan, and how he feels lonely and wants to be loved. So if you look closer, you'll discover that he was sweetly forcing himself on the lead, (Raja), like a nagging sidekick, however well meaning. Further than that, all the genies of the stories and the movies can fulfill just 3 or 7 wishes. However, this genie would stay for a year, with unlimited wishes to come true (suits a more than 2 hours Indian movie for sure!).

(Shammi Kapoor), as an actor, made a perfect job to show us that kind infant-inside-big man. He was very funny and light. The cute star (Rajesh Khanna) along with the charming (Sulakshana Pandit) made an adorable performance. Even (Johnny Walker) as (Suleiman M. A) was fine, despite that the role didn't give him much to do, or to say. I think this is a movie where everything was just comic and fanciful.

For instance, the sequence of (Raja)'s own Taj Mahal, or the brilliant first meeting between (Raja) and the genie; it was authentic that (Khanna) didn't panic, he just smiled indifferently and walked away, to discover suddenly that IT IS a genie! Or how the genie proves his powers by turning a flower into an elephant!

(Shammi Kapoor), as the movie's director, mastered a joyful time. It has fast pace, fine sets, touching memorable music by the great (RD Burman), especially the genie's theme which repeated beautifully and variously throughout the movie, not to mention the wonderful songs. Back in the day, the love songs were sublimely romantic, with high meanings, and kind of holiness for such a noble feeling.

One of the best elements was the special effects by (Babubhai Mistry). Yes, it's not a Hollywood blockbuster, yes it was obvious at times, but largely there were super moments like the one in which the 2 lovers were singing on the snow along with the huge genie beside them.. That was REAL!

This script was simple and marvelous at its start. You can somewhat sense the urge to present streets with poor inhabitants, little thieves, and so many alumnus young men who find no job or even a meaning out of their education in a society that doesn't confess anything but money, or respect anyone but the rich. So, naturally, on the other hand there was this riotous loud masquerade of the other class, the upper one, which lives its heaven where, cleverly, the wealthy girl's father is a judge, and her evil brat cousin is a police officer. It's unmistakably a hot satire against some class that owns everything, including authority and law, while the lower class longs for a genie to measure up, or even get to live. I loved the party scene with its bitter irony; where they were all liars, but the poor was the only honest one. Anyhow, that tone wasn't deep or continuous; it was only the good environment for the fantasy to begin.

It seems that it has no meaning, but look at the climax where the guarding genie lost his power at the devil's cave. That wasn't for granted. It's a good move to show us how (Raja) doesn't need above-human power to save his love as he must, and can, relay on his will only.

The problem though was that they made the hero refuse the genie, or to be rich, since the beginning. So what did really change in him after the whole thing? Nearly nothing; which weakened the drama. Also there is some naivety: (Raja) throws the ring that can bring the demon in the street plainly!, and some hastiness: the storyline of (Raja)'s sister, the third act, and the end.

But whatever, (Bundal Baaz) is absolute fun, and in despite of being 3 hours long, it flows briskly just like (Shammi Kapoor) who you have to love for all of this hilarity, and all of this innocence.
