Iconic Indian Actor Shashi Kapoor Dies at 79
The star of numerous Merchant-Ivory films, Indian actor Shashi Kapoor has died after a prolonged illness. He was 79. He was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday with a chest infection and died on Monday.

Kapoor was one of the few Indian actors who straddled the cinemas of India and the West. He was the youngest son of actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

After appearing as a child actor in Raj Kapoor’s “Aag” (1948) and “Awaara,” Shashi Kapoor debuted as a leading man in 1961 in Yash Chopra’s “Dharmputra.”

Kapoor’s association with the James Ivory-Ismail Merchant team began in 1963 with “The Householder” and continued with “Shakespeare-Wallah” (1965), “Bombay Talkie” (1970) and “In Custody” (1994), which was also his last major film role.

His numerous successes in Hindi-language films in the early part of his career include “Waqt,” “Jab Jab Phool Khile,” “Haseena Maan Jayegi,” “Pyar Ka Mausam,” and “Aa Gale Lag Jaa” (1973).

Veteran actor-filmmaker Shashi Kapoor was admitted to a Mumbai hospital for cataract surgery, said media reports on Friday. The 74-year-old underwent the eye surgery at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. According to reports, the procedure went well. He will be discharged soon. Veteran actor and the youngest of the Kapoor brothers, Shashi Kapoor underwent cataract surgery at a Mumbai hospital on Friday. After the operation, he was discharged. "He underwent a cataract surgery at the hospital. He is doing well and was discharged today," Dr Ram Narain, COO, Kokilaben Hospital, said. Aamir Khan was celebrating his success with 3 Idiots when the news of his father Mr. Tahir Hussain's passing away struck the Khan family. Mr. Tahir Hussain passed away in the wee hours of the 2nd of February 2010 by a massive heart-attack.

For the dilettante lot, he was a descendant of Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad, rooted to the ethnic Pashtuns of Afghanistan, but an Indian. Late Tahir Hussain started his film career in 1957 as an assistant director to his brother Nasir in films like Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Dil Deke Dekho He produced films like Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), Anamika (1973), Caravan (1973) and had directed the Aamir-Juhi starrer Tum Mere Ho in the year 1990. Tahir was also seen on screen with Janam Janam Na Saath (1977), Pyar Ka Mausam (1969) and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961).
