I was recently alerted to the fact that Frank Borzage's 1937 masterpiece Big City is finally available on DVD in the Us, thanks to Warner Archive's Luis Rainer Collection. As such, I've pulled from Notebook's Archive of the Unpublished an unfinished piece I worked on some time ago on this terrific film, gleaned, as you will see from the images, from Turner Classic Movies in France (ignore the subtitles—the images were chosen for the images, not the words on them). It's not particularly finished or even unified and it's more description than anything else, but I hope it inspires you to see this film.
A fan of director Frank Borzage has to be a bit of a patient crate-digger, finding his films as they pop up in rare retrospectives (7th Heaven, not-so-rare on the Old Film Circuit, but the rest are sporadic) or unexpectedly on Turner Classic Movies, which...

Jeremy Sisto and his wife Addie Lane joined a list of celebrity parents giving their child a unique name. But the proud parents didn't take all the credit for their newborn son's given moniker. "Little man finally told us his name; Bastian Kick Sisto," Jeremy tweeted on March 21. Only a week old, and the little guy's already making his own choices! Bastion's parents welcomed their son on March 15 and quickly took advantage of the baby-naming extension at the hospital. "My wife is stressed about [naming him], but I’m hoping something magical happens… that makes me thinks, 'Oh, well of course this is supposed to be his name,'" the 37-year-old actor shared on Live! With Kelly. Looks like the magic finally struck. Little Bastion will join his two-year-old sister, Charlie-Ballerina,...

What's in a name? If you're Jared Padalecki and Jeremy Sisto, plenty. The two actors, who both welcomed sons within the past week, took a little extra time to lock down monikers for their kids by holding off until after the little ones entered the world. Well, the birth certificates are now complete—so what are the tiny tykes' names? "Little man finally told us his name," Sisto tweeted on Wednesday night. "Bastian Kick Sisto." Definitely a unique choice and, as one of the Suburgatory star's followers pointed out, reminiscent of the lead character in the movie The NeverEnding Story. Meanwhile, Supernatural's Padalecki and his wife opted for...

Suburgatory star Jeremy Sisto and his wife Addie Lane welcomed a son into the world on March 9, but had trouble locking in a name.

Clueless Reunion on Suburgatory
But late last night Jeremy Tweeted the official naming announcement.

Images of The NeverEnding Story immediately flew into my head as if Falkor had delivered them himself! Whether or not Jeremy's son is named after the lead character in the children's classic is kind of irrelevant, since that's all anyone is going to think about. In fact, the first name is such an attention getter, you almost overlook the fact his middle name is Kick. Almost...

Each week within this column we strive to pair the latest in theatrical releases to worthwhile titles currently available on Netflix Instant Watch. This week we offer alternatives to 21 Jump Street, Jeff Who Lives at Home and The Kid With a Bike.

Inspired by the popular ’80s TV drama, this R-rated comedy stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as two undercover cops sent back to high school to bust a drug ring. Brie Larson and Ice Cube co-star.

Marlon Wayans is currently shooting his directorial debut on a "found footage" movie, called "Smart Ass," that's a spoof of such horror films as "Paranormal Activity" and "The Devil Inside." Mike Tiddes is co-directing the new film with Wayans, who also stars in it with Essence Atkins ("Are We There Yet?). Regular Wayans collaborator Rick Alvarez (Little Man, White Chicks) is on board to produce. It's not clear if this will somehow affect "Scary Movie 5," which is supposed to hit theaters on April 20th. That obviously won't happen.

Before I launch into how bad "Ioenscopade" is -- and truly the depths of that will be examined for years -- please consider the following facts:
1) I am holding back since it is a small off-Broadway production of a decidedly unusual piece.
2) I have a finely honed sense of the absurd, both as a fan of Ionesco, and as the mother of teenagers; one of whom has taken to self-orthondontistry and the other who is an actor.
3) I was rooting for this.
That said and cutting every conceivable amount of slack, the most charitable thing I can say is that the costume designer, Nicole Wee, has a great eye and a fine sense of color and millinery.
When Geoffrey Rush brought "Exit the King" to Broadway in 2009, we saw how truly funny the truly absurd can be. But even I, who relishes the absurd -- I watch not only all...

The queen of pop's film about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor ignores the evidence, dismissing allegations of Nazi sympathies and recasting the needy Edward as a brooding hunk
W.E. (2012)
Director: Madonna
Entertainment grade: D+
History grade: D–
In 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated to marry his lover, Wallis Simpson. They became the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
Style
Despite its critical panning, not everything about W.E. is terrible. The costumes are very nice. Andrea Riseborough gives a decent performance as Wallis – though admittedly the brittle, self-conscious dialogue is better suited to her character than to anyone else's. W.E. interweaves the story of the king and Mrs Simpson with the tribulations of a fictional New Yorker, Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is obsessed with Wallis. She attends the 1998 auction of the Windsors' belongings at Sotheby's, hallucinating Wallis's ghost as she idly fondles a pug-shaped cushion. Meanwhile, her marriage to a nasty...

I had no idea what to expect when I received Shut Up Little Man! in the mail. I'd heard that it was good, but I didn't bother seeking out any other information on the film. It was a film that very well could have slipped through the cracks for me, but thankfully it arrived in a package of review discs, and I'm glad I've gotten a chance to see it. Shut Up Little Man! is a film that grows on you and the ideas in the film plant seeds that bloom long after the film is over. What seems like a simple film about a couple of guys who argued loudly could mean so much more to the person who chooses to explore. The Tribeca...
