Melies provides us with a simple magic trick -- or is it so simple? -- as, dressed in Greek garb, he stuffs nine young women in chitons, one after another, into a barrel. It's not terribly elaborate, but it is very well done, as he presents us with simply a magic trick, combining his skills as a stage magician with those of a camera magician -- and he knows his art enough to give us a topper at the end.
This is one of the many previously lost or infrequently seen Melies pictures that have been made available by Serge Bromberg, David Shepherd and a myriad of other hands in the newly issued DVD set GEORGES MELIES: FIRST WIZARD OF CINEMA. Required viewing for anyone interested in the history of movies ..... and a lot of fun.
