This is the first motion picture footage Theodore Roosevelt, the future 26th President of the United States, when he was the 39 year old Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He is seen displaying his characteristic energy and drive as he skips several steps bounding down the steps from the US Treasury Building in Washington, DC. In a few months, when the War with Spain that he had been pushing for is launched, he will resign his civilian post and be instrumental along with Leonard Wood, medical doctor and Medal of Honor winner fighting the Apaches, and White House Physician, in forming the First US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, nicknamed "Roosevelts Rough Riders" or simply the "Rough Riders. When Wood is promoted in Cuba, Roosevelt will assume command and will lead them in a headlong charge up Kettle Hill and on to San Juan Hill in Cuba. This charge will ultimately carry him to the governorship of New York, and ultimately, the White House and Roosevelt will eventually be awarded the Medal of Honor in 2001.
