9 September 2003 | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Robert Rodriguez will be honored with an Award of Excellence in Filmmaking on Oct. 2 at ShowEast, which kicks off Sept. 29 at the Orlando World Center Marriott. Rodriguez most recently wrote, directed and produced Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, the Dimension Films release that has grossed more than $108 million since it opened July 25. Sony Pictures will release his next film, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, a Columbia Pictures/Dimension co-production starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Johnny Depp, on Friday. Mexico is the third film in a trilogy that began with his feature debut, El Mariachi, which was shot on video for just $7,000 and went on to win the audience award at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. Columbia Pictures acquired the film for distribution and also produced its 1995 sequel, Desperado. Rodriguez's other credits include From Dusk to Dawn, The Faculty and the first two Spy Kids movies. "We are delighted that Robert Rodriguez will be receiving this award from the nation's exhibitors at ShowEast," said Mitch Neuhauser, co-managing director of ShowEast. "It is very exciting to honor him, not only in recognition of the highly successful 'Spy Kids' series, but for his wide range of success and versatility." Rodriguez will receive the award at a luncheon co-sponsored by Miramax Films and Nielsen EDI. »

Fresh from the success of Dimension Films' Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, Alexa Vega is packing her bags to join MGM's Sleepover. The Joe Nussbaum-directed comedy, which was just greenlighted, is due to begin lensing Sept. 29 in Los Angeles. The project revolves around a group of young girls the summer before they make the leap to high school. As one girl prepares to move out of town, her best friend (Vega) throws a slumber party for her and their friends the same night as the "popular girls" have their own overnight soiree. A competitive scavenger hunt ensues between the two parties, with a special prize for the winners: dibs on the best table in the high school lunchroom. Bob Cooper and Chuck Weinstock are producing from a script by Elisa Bell. At MGM, the project is being overseen by Elizabeth Ingold and Stephanie Palmer. Vega stars in all three installments of Spy Kids. Her other credits include the television series Ladies Man and films The Deep End of the Ocean and Ghosts of Mississippi. Clooney's Cameo Conflict

10 July 2003 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

George Clooney almost landed in a legal battle with movie studios Dimension Films over a cameo appearance he makes in the new Spy Kids sequel. The Ocean's Eleven actor was reportedly angry film makers tried to overplay his brief appearance in trailers for Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, which stars Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone. A source tells American gossip site The Scoop, "He has a cameo in the movie, but he didn't want his image used in the previews. He said it was inappropriate and cheesy to overplay his very short appearance in the movie. Dimension was begging him but he was adamant. So lawyers were called in." It seems the matter has been resolved amicably - representatives for both parties insist the actor will appear in the trailers with his full approval. »
