A film for the entire family!
27 May 2005 | by (Hoosierland) – See all my reviews

"In the mines, they took the horses underground, where they would spend their lives. The horses became blind from living in darkness, and heir lungs would fail...My father had been the horse's driver. When he left the mine, he bought the horse from the company so that they might both see the sun and walk upon the grass." Over the years, the man and the horse had formed an inseparable bond-on easily shared by the man's children, if not his wife.To each member of the family, the horse symbolized some link to the past. Now too old and sick to work, the horse had become a burden on their frugal resources. At the mother's insistence, the horse was to be sold. IN THE FALL is a timeless story for all generations. A drama about family conflict, family love, growing up, and the mystery of learning to give up in order to gain. Beautifully photographed in an isolated fishing community. the narrator sensitively shares his memories of the conflict over Scotty, the horse of his father's past-conflict between idealism and practical realities of survival, between sentiment and necessity, between lost childhood dreams and the demands of becoming an adult. IN THE FALL provides a rich basis for studying and discussing family relationships, values and decision making. Though only forty minutes, it covers the gamut like no other movie I have ever seen! 14 international awards including the Gold Apple Award. It is based on the short story by Alistair MacLeod and does the book justice!

A definite "must see" film.
