Les Romanesques
15 September 2016 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

Edith Storey won't give Chester Hess the time of day, so his brother, Ned Finley kidnaps her so Chester can have the glory of rescuing her in this fine Vitagraph film.

Edmond Rostand is best remembered for writing the play CYRANO DE BERGERAC. His next best-known work is probably LES ROMANESQUES, known to the modern American audience as the musical THE FANTASTICKS. This short film covers some of the same ground. Ned Finley is given the leading role and many of the best shots as he thinks quietly while loading his gun for the abduction or calmly eating a sandwich while Edith Storey rages at him. Finley had a nice career through 1918, directing and starring in many a western vehicle, but something went wrong. Two years after his last movie, he killed himself by taking poison.

A nicely tinted copy of this movie can be seen on the Eye Institute site on Youtube.
