Storyline

Mrs. Scranton, a poor widow, dies, leaving two children, Frank and Mildred. She gives the son her heirloom, an old silver watch. Having no immediate relatives, her children are adopted by two families of means. Tears afterward Frank and Mildred meet. Mildred is attacked by a thief who tries to steal her pocketbook. Frank comes to her assistance and has the foot-pad arrested. Not knowing each other, he and Mildred fall in love and become engaged to be married. The wedding is about to be performed by the clergyman when the thief sneaks into the house, and seeing Frank, shoots at him. The ball strikes the old silver watch in Frank's vest pocket. Frank takes the time-piece from his pocket and it is recognized by his sister. From it they learn their relationship and the love of brother and sister is renewed. The Horrors of Incest
4 July 2016 | by (New York City) – See all my reviews

Maurice Costello and Leah Baird are brother and sister -- but don't know it. When their mother died many years ago, she left them orphans, separated and raised in different foster homes until chance brought them together: Maurice rescued Leah from a thief and they fell in love. Will nothing save them from the sin of incest?

The sort of rampant coincidence and intention-free sin is the sort of thing that made up the public view of melodrama and which made it so easy to burlesque after it had fallen out of favor. Yet the truth is that, as with any form of entertainment, people go to have a good time. Unless the people offering the show call attention to its flaws, or the audience goes disposed to mock, the public will be pleased -- which is why I watched the musical version of SWEENEY TODD -- starring Angela Lansbury -- twice yesterday.

It's why if you go to the Eye Institute site on Youtube, you likely will enjoy the copy of this film that has been posted there. MR. Costello and Miss Baird are fine performers and the story is well told.
