Storyline

After the death of his alcoholic father, Jonathan Breech steals his father's ashes from his brother's house. He drives a stolen car off a cliff in order to commit suicide but he survives. After this, he accepts an alternative sentence of three months in therapy in a psychiatric hospital. There, he joins a suicide group under the supervision of Dr. Figure. He befriends a disturbed Rachel Row (who saw her mother dying in an accident) and Toby (who accidentally killed his brother in a car crash). During the treatment, the sarcastic Jonathan changes his behavior and sees the importance of being alive. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Quotes

[after Toby has killed himself]
Jonathan: You can never really know what was going through a person's mind at that exact moment. If they survive, they'll never tell you. If they succeed, all you can do is spend the rest of your life feeling guilty. You're only concern can be for the people they leave behind. They're the ones to look out for.

Rushmore meets Girl, Interrupted
11 July 2001 | by (Galway, Ireland) – See all my reviews

After seeing this film's premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh, I cannot wait for it to be released in theatres. The acting is exceptional, especially on the part of Cillian Murphy. John Carney's direction is innovative and hopeful, and his free use of camera movements, angles and extreme close-ups adds so much to the depth of this film. Finally, the soundtrack is essential to the emotional impact of the movie. All in all, a versatile and funny film that is optimistic without nearing sappiness.
