Mrs. Urmy is so anxious for her daughter, Jeannette, to marry a member of the nobility that she has inserted in an English newspaper that an engagement is pending between Jeannette and Lord Chilminster, notwithstanding the fact that neither has seen the other. Jeannete reads the announcement and runs away with a chauffeur who has driven up to the house of Lady Hartley, her aunt. To end her troubles quickly, Jeannette suggests that the chauffeur marry her, but that she be allowed to remain a wife in name only. She tells Barton, the chauffeur, that he can name his own terms if he will consent. They are married and start on an automobile trip through the country. Barton finally exerts his husbandly authority and angers Jeannette, who flies homeward to escape him. He follows and arrives just as Jeanette is explaining matters to her mother and Lady Hartley, and hears Lady Hartley tell Jeannette that Barton is only his family name and that he is Lord Chilminster.
