A wisp of a plot, plus unsatisfactory porn
lor_28 January 2011
Starting out with an actual storyline, GUESS WHO'S COMING soon devolves into porn for porn's sake, and not arousing porn at that.

Unknown filmmaker Jai Hais (credits typically all look like untraceable pseudonyms) shows a modicum of talent, but sum total of his efforts is zero.

Opening scene of a couple in bed (she's plain but has impressive dark nipples showing) plays like a kitchen sink drama. Film features background sound but is mostly MOS with voice-over. Middle-aged hero Bob is a TV commercials director who has been assigned to direct a skin flick titled "Lovely Bodies". I'm guessing this is the first Freudian reveal, from which we can infer the true identity of "Jai Hais" and his day job. Probably a frustrated "General Hospital" helmer.

His direction here tries (and fails) to be artsy, with low-key lighting reminiscent of '40s films noirs, way too heavy given the cute or intended comical content. We're supposedly being treated to a behind the scenes peek at filmmaking, but we never see the nudie being filmed at all, a big structural defect.

Jai's casting call is clear: he rounded up non-actresses with nice looking breasts but unattractive faces; the type Imus in the Morning would call "skanky". Since it's 1969, one young girl dancing (to rock & roll) in the studio dressing room reveals full-frontal nudity. Maybe a big deal back then, but ho-hum now.

Sexual highlight is probably Bob's dallying with his secretary, who displays terrific, pointy cone nipples. The secretary reports in flashback how she was raped by the boss's son one night after hours at the studio. This flashback is fairly complex, with a violent, hand-held camera segment for the rape, and later (after the son nearly chokes her to death) a tables-turned sequence where she laughs at him, humiliating him. All prime exploitation fodder, but not knitted together in a satisfying narrative.

Idiotic finale is rushed, with Bob taking a stand at the risk of losing his job, followed by a final sex scene with his wife for closure.

There's no matching credits, but I believe Bob is played by Bob O'Connell, who starred memorably in Kemal Horulu's classic SOME LIKE IT VIOLENT. I recommend that picture, a high-quality product compared to COMING.
