Marking a startling upturn in fortune, CBS not only won first place in the overall household ratings last week but also won among viewers 18-to-49, the first time it has done so (except for Olympics coverage) since 1994. It was helped by the hit reality series Survivor and the relatively strong performance of the new reality show Big Brother. The two series represent "an extraordinary opportunity to bring audiences to CBS who haven't been there in a long time, " Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Tom Wolzien told today's (Wednesday) New York Daily News. Interest in the two shows -- plus the return of original episodes of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire -- also helped the networks avert another huge plunge in the ratings for the week. For the past several years, ratings for all programming during the week of Independence Day have established new record lows. CBS wound up the week with a 6.8 rating and a 13 share (last year: 6.1/13). ABC was second with a 6.2/12 (last year: 5.3/11). NBC was third with a 5.6/11 (last year 5.5/11), while Fox trailed with a 4.2/8 (last year: 3.8/8).
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. Survivor, CBS, 15.2/27; 2. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Thursday), ABC, 14.0/24; 3. Big Brother, CBS, 13.9/23; 4. Millionaire (Sunday), ABC, 12.7/210.; 5. 48 Hours, CBS, 10.5/18; 6. 60 Minutes, CBS, 9.8/20; 7. 20/20 Downtown, ABC, 9.3/16; 8. Millionaire (Tuesday), ABC, 8.7/19; 9. Law and Order, NBC, 8.5/15; 10. Touched by an Angel, CBS, 8.4/15. »
