A risky and misunderstood film of Vicente Aranda
11 August 2015 | by (Spain) – See all my reviews

April 24, 1913, Rodrigo Garcia Jalon attended the Casino of the Fine Arts in Madrid with the intention of exchanging 5,000 pesetas a tab. "At the site you'll bring money does not interest me," said the employee. More elegantly dressed than usual; an American striped vest and a silk scarf. He ended the brief conversation with the receptionist and left. It was the last time he was seen alive.

The next day, the same record back to the Casino. It had changed hands. This time was a young girl dressed in a modern blue dress who grabbed her tightly. Although he was banned from women who were not accompanied, the girl tried to exchange the card and even tried to bribe the employee to achieve an end. The clerk refused, as Garcia Jalon himself had warned the day before that the record will not change anyone but him. The girl left empty. At the door, according to the employee himself, he expected a guy who looked like "cocky." The girl's dress was Maria Luisa Sanchez Noguerol, a woman of barely twenty years old and working as a laundress who had studied to be a teacher. She was the eldest daughter of Captain Manuel Sanchez Lopez, head of ordinances War College and had four younger siblings: Manolita, Manuel, Luis and Julio. The mother, Luisa Nogerol, had abandoned the family a few years earlier.

His father, Captain Sanchez, was a veteran. Born in La Coruna, he had been decorated for his role in the battle of Peralejo, in the war between Spain and Cuba. Despite his military merits, he had also been involved in violent altercations and was ruined by his gambling debts. Before arriving in Madrid, he was accused of having caused the fire in a barracks that had rented in Galicia secured by 4,000 pesetas. In that event he disappeared a man named Juan Maria Perez Sanchez.

Sanchez, who had a family history of angry and crazy character, was obsessed with his daughter. Having sex with her and forced her into prostitution, plus the captain and his daughter also bribe the guys who came to Maria Luisa.

Rodrigo Garcia Jalon Probably if I had known all this never would have approached Maria Luisa in that spring of 1913. Without knowing it, he put his life in grave danger. Widower of fifty, womanizer and wealthy, with several businesses owned, took a fancy to the young man as he met her.

Second episode of the series themed "La Huella Del Crimen", produced by Pedro Costa Muste for TVE in 1985 and consists of six separate episodes Spain Set in the early twentieth century, Aranda us into a gray and decaying, bitter and destructive story, devoid of goodness, while constantly director quasi macabre incident situations.

The performances of its two main protagonists Victoria Abril and Fernando Guillen are splendid, excel in their performances. The end result is a film as risky and misunderstood at the time as worthy of worship and even after last thirty years.
