Quotes

  • [first lines]

Sally : [sitting on the side of the road and eating finger foods while sullenly trying to hitchhike]  Gee, the folks back in Kokomo sure will laugh when we get home from our vacation two weeks ahead of time.

Mary : Don't worry, it'll be over by the time we get back.

[standing up as another car passes by]

Mary : Maybe we can hitch a ride if our thumbs hold out long enough.

Sally : Oh, men aren't interested in thumbs, silly. Say, I saw Claudette Colbert hitch a ride in a movie once like this.

[hikes up her skirt hem to show her leg and instantly a man in a passing car stops]

    Sally : See, it worked.

Mary : Bet there's a hitch to it.

Sally : [bubbly, as she and Mary climb in the car]  We're going to Komomo!

Mary : Hope it's not out of your way.

    [they begin driving]

  • Mary : [riding in the car as passengers]  I suppose you wonder why we're hitchhiking.

    Johnny Weissmuller : Uh huh.

Sally : You probably think it's because we didn't get in pictures.

    Johnny Weissmuller : Uh huh.

Mary : We didn't even try.

Sally : No. We went to Hollywood to see the stars.

    [turning to Johnny]

Sally : Say, you know, you look just like Johnny Weissmuller.

    Johnny Weissmuller : Uh huh.

Mary : You know, the guy who plays Tarzan - YEoOoOoOo!

Sally : You have his eyes, and his nose...

Mary : ...you got his car, too.

Sally : [subtly]  Gee, he must be generous.

[Weissmuller pulls over as the women get out]

Sally : Ya ever get to Kokomo, look us up.

    [they giggle]

Sally : See ya in the movies, see ya in a tree!

    [Weissmuller drives away]

  • Mary : [hitchhiking for the second time]  Step aside, I'll flag this one. My stockings on straight?

    Sally : On those legs?

Mary : [They shriek as a truck drives by and inadvertantly splashes them with mud and water from a puddle]  You!... You!... Hmph!

  • Mary : Say, do you see what I see?

[points to an animal trailer with the word/name 'Kokomo' printed on the side]

Sally : Kokomo? What a break!

Mary : Say, do you think we could steal a ride?

Sally : I'm tired of beggin' one. Come on, quick.

filling station attendant : On your way to the Pas Springs Rodeo with that wild steer?

Rodeo Official : Yep, and he's rearin' to go.

filling station attendant : You mind if I have a peep?

Rodeo Official : [referring to the name of the steer]  If you ever opened that door, Kokomo would kick the sides outta this here trailer.

[the women sneak into the trailer and Rogers drives away from the filling station]

Mary : Uh, Sally, there's... there's somebody else in this trailer besides us.

Sally : Yeah, whoever it is, is wearing a fur coat.

Mary : Who is it? Who is it?

    [the steer loudly moos]

Sally : I'm getting out of here!

[She heads to the trailer door, leaving some light in]

Mary : Ah-ha-ha, Sally come back, it's only a cow.

Sally : [lightheartedly chuckling]  Oh, well, maybe he's related to Ferdinand.

Mary : Hah, a cousin, once removed.

Sally : Yeah, I... wish he was removed now.

  • Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Once again, the annual rodeo at Palm Springs is heralded by a colorful western parade through America's famous desert resort, and contestants come from far and wide to participate. Even that idol of countless movie fans, Tom Mix, rides again; and with these added attractions, the rodeo is off to a good start. Film stars from the nearby cinema capital bring along their favorite livestock in cattle pullments.

Sally : [the trailer named KOKOMO arrives at the rodeo, the steer itself charges out of the back as the door is opened, and Mary and Sally come out after it looking perplexed and confused as to where they are]  What happened?

    Mary : Where are we?

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : [his event announcements being interspersed between Mary and Sally's personal dialogue to one another]  And now, it's rodeo time again in Palm Springs.

Sally : Well, it isn't Kokomo.

[referring to their hometown in Indiana where they thought they were headed]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Here we are, out in the wide open spaces.

Mary : Isn't that Tom Neal announcing?

    Sally : It sure is.

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Presenting that rough ridin' western cinema light, Roy Rogers.

Mary : Oh it's wonderful! Look, there's Jackie Cooper. He's all grown up and following in the footsteps of Tom Mix.

Sally : Gee, it's Rudy Vallee. Hi Rudy!

    [the women giggle with excitement]

Mary : Look, there's Gene Autry. He's the most popular riding and singing cowboy north or south of the border.

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : And now, contestants, on with the show! Let's see how much rodeo dough you can grab in the way of cash prizes.

Sally : Did you hear that?

    Mary : Did I?

Rodeo Official : [approaching the women]  Say, are you girls in the rodeo?

Sally : Oh, sure - sure we're in.

Rodeo Official : Well, you'd better hurry and get into your costumes over in the dressing tent.

    Sally : Yeah.

[She grabs Mary's arm and they eagerly head towards the dressing tent]

  • Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : And now, ladies and gentlemen, comes the feature event of the day: Mr. Johnny Weissmuller

    [the crowd cheers]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : is offering a cash prize of five hundred dollars to anyone who is able to ride his steer, Kokomo, once around the arena.

Mary : Kokomo? That explains everything.

Sally : Gee, if we could ride him and get that five hundred dollars, we could go back to Kokomo in a private car.

Mary : Yeah, or maybe an ambulance.

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Anyone wishing to compete for the prize money, please step over to the chutes.

    Sally : Come on, quick.

    Mary : Where you going?

Sally : [eagerly grabs Mary's hand and yanks her along]  Pick daisies.

    Mary : Huh?

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : And here comes the first young hopeful on Kokomo. Ride 'em, cowboy! Yahoo, yippee!

[the man makes his attempt but unfortunately fails]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Introducing the champion steer rider of all syeer riders, Arizona Joe, who will compete for the prize money on Kokomo. Hi-ho, Joe, let 'em go! Yo-ho, woah!

[Joe makes his attempt but unfortunately fails as well and gets hurt while falling to the ground]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Too bad, Joe; better luck next time.

Sally : Look Mary, some poor fella got hurt.

Mary : He must've had an accident.

    Sally : Yeah.

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Does anyone else want to take a chance for the prize money on Kokomo?

Sally , Mary : We do!

Johnny Weissmuller : [approvingly as he apparently recognizes the women]  Uh huh.

  • [last lines]

Sally : See what we brought for you, Kokomo? Nice fresh flowers.

Mary : You ride him, Sally.

Sally : Oh-ho-ho, no; you're the one he's crazy about.

Mary : Well alright, I'll get on, but you turn him around and be headin' for the prize money.

    Sally : Ok.

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Just a couple of Kokomo campfire girls out to bring home the bacon.

[focusing on Mary as she nervously mounts Kokomo]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : One for the money,

[focusing on Sally as she happily holds Kokomo's tail]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : two for the show,

[the crowd eagerly awaits their riding attempt]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : three to make ready,

[they begin their wildly haphazard and humorous attempt]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : and there they go! With Kokomo taking the lead, it looks like a homerun. Ride 'em, cowboy; or I-I mean cowgirl. At the quarter mile it's one down and one to go, with the odds against Kokomo. Yahoo! Stick with him, sister!

[Tom and Johnny laugh with surprisement at Mary's oddly successful riding attempt]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : And she did it! They did it, and how! The winner, and champion! Weissmuller pays off! Yippee!

[running over to Mary and Sally as they dust themselves off]

Tom Neal - Announcer at Rodeo : Congratulations, girls, here's the five hundred dollars.

Johnny Weissmuller : Now you go Kokomo.

Sally , Mary : You mean Hollywood!

[Kokomo bellows and rushes toward them as they run out of the way - 'The End']
