Harpur and Iles
Prismark107 February 2023
Set in a coastal town in Wales. Adapted from books by James Tucker.

Assistant Chief Constable Desmond Iles (Hywel Bennett) is an abrasive, cynical copper who has eyes on the top job.

Detective Superintendent Colin Harpur (Aneirin Hughes) has to put up with Iles dodgy ways and he just wants to do his job by the book.

Both get into action when the son of gangster Tenderness Mellick (Jim Carter) is abducted by rival gangsters.

Tenderness Mellick is regarded responsible for the death of one of the rival gangsters. However soon the gang that abducted the child have to face their own double crosses.

This is a seedy thriller. Harpur has to contend with a bent cop who is due to retire but has taken kickbacks from the likes of Mellick.

Iles has internal affairs sniffing about. As well as an up and coming detective having an affair with his wife.

This is a seedy grimy thriller with many unlikeable characters. Even Harpur is difficult to root for, even his own wife distrusts him.

Hywel Bennett, shorn of his baby face and much puffier due to his drinking dominates. There is no subtlety in his character.

Made by the BBC. This was meant to be a continuing television series but it seems they opted to make more Dalziel and Pascoe instead. They were more palatable as bickering cops duo.
