First Epic Trailer for The Russian WWII War Drama Stalingrad

13 May 2013 4:21 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

“9th Company” and “Inhabited Island” director Fedor Bondarchuk brings the epic in his latest, the WWII war drama “Stalingrad”, which has unleashed a full-fledged trailer you can see below. You can definitely tell where the film’s $30 million budget went. The Battle of Stalingrad is a particularly popular topic among the Russians, with a number of big-budgeted films already devoted to it in the past. Hollywood even got in on the act with 2001′s “Enemy at the Gates” starring Jude Law and Rachel Weisz. Check out the first blood-and-guts and explosions trailer for “Stalingrad” below. Using a cover of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” over the trailer was a really nice touch, I think. The film was also shot in IMAX 3D, if you’re into that sort of thing. Stalingrad is a drama set during one of the most important battles of World War II which stopped »

Stalingrad Trailer Makes It Look Like Russia's Saving Private Ryan

13 May 2013 7:44 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Get ready for Mother Russia.s version of Saving Private Ryan! Ok, so there might be more to director Fedor Bondarchuk.s Stalingrad than that, but the first international trailer for the war-torn drama (posted above via YouTube) sure makes it look like a cross between Steven Spielberg.s Oscar winner and the equally gritty Enemy at the Gates. We have a band of brothers defending a distinct location against an enemy threat. We have snipers, an unnecessary romance, and cloudy historial accuracies. We have that washed out, grey cinematography that just screams .This was set during World War II!. Seriously, did the sun ever shine over Europe while the continent.s lands were being destroyed by ongoing battles? The film is attempting to tell a romantic story against the backdrop of a significant Russian battle. But from what we.re reading, it will be significant to Russian culture for »

Will platoon of Gallipoli films give Turkish audiences battle fatigue?

9 May 2013 4:20 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Hollywood often produces two films on one subject, but the six movies based on the Battle of Çanakkale are a sign of a healthy domestic market for Turkish products

Maybe one sign of a fully matured film industry is when it's capable of spewing out an Olympus Has Fallen and a White House Down at the same time – coinciding films with identical subjects. One of those little zeitgeist clots that suggest creative minds running in parallel, in a highly evolved community driven by the relentless background hum of close competition – and also, all those scripts passing between studios, with ample opportunities for intellectual-property theft. Mostly, these weird convergences seem to come in pairs: Deep Impact and Armageddon, A Bug's Life and Antz, and so on.

So what does it say about the emerging Turkish industry that it has six movies on the same subject either recently on release or imminent? »

Jude Law on phone hacking, being 40 and his new film Side Effects

3 March 2013 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The actor has long had a fraught relationship with the media and their intrusions on his private life. As he promotes his new film with Steven Soderbergh, he talks about life post-Leveson and his love of theatre

'I'm 40! I'm an adult!" shouts Jude Law. "Aren't I?" We hold these truths to be self-evident, I reply, as the actor, laughing, stares across the table with those adorable baby blues and more hair than's fair. "But," he says more quietly, "part of me thinks I can't play a doctor. Who would come to me?"

You've got to be kidding. Who wouldn't come to Dr Jude? In Steven Soderbergh's film Side Effects, Law plays an Englishman in New York, a slimy limey of a pill-dispensing psychiatrist who becomes entangled in murder, drug switcheroos, a risible lesbian insider trading scam and lots more vaguely voguish, putatively Hitchkockian hokum before the credits. In His Own Words: Jean-Jacques Annaud Shares a Scene From 'Day of the Falcon' Starring Antonio Banderas

26 February 2013 8:53 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Jean-Jacques Annaud, no stranger to period epics (having directed "Enemy at the Gates" and "Seven Years in Tibet"), is back in theaters this Friday with another ambitious undertaking, the 1930's set "Day of the Falcon," starring Antonio Banderas, Mark Strong and Freida Pinto. The sprawling Arabian drama tells the story of two rival kingdoms plagued by war, and the two young lovers who try to bring peace to the ravaged region. Below, Annaud shares one of his favorite scenes from the film. "Day of the Falcon" is currently available on VOD and opens in select theaters March 1st. This is a very symbolic scene from my last film "Day Of The Falcon." It is a scene half way through the movie where there is a violent clash between camels and tanks. Flesh versus iron. Tradition against modernity. I read a very fascinating book called "South of the Heart: A Novel »

Batman vs. Superman - An extract from Holy Franchise, Batman!

24 January 2013 6:09 AM, PST | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Gary Collinson presents an extract from his book Holy Franchise, Batman! Bringing the Caped Crusader to the Screen detailing director Wolfgang Petersen's aborted DC superhero cross-over movie Batman vs. Superman...

Although Warner Bros was finding it difficult to relaunch the Dark Knight after Batman & Robin, the struggle was nothing compared to that of its other major DC property, Superman. Having ushered in the modern superhero film in 1978 with Richard Donner’s Superman: The Movie, the Man of Steel had been absent from the screen since his own franchise-killer, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, which the studio co-produced with Cannon Films back in 1987. The failure of Superman IV brought an end to a proposed fifth instalment in the Christopher Reeve series, with Batman producer Jon Peters subsequently coming on board in the early 1990s and commissioning a number of scripts based upon DC Comics’ ‘The Death and Return of Superman »
