As nobody else is going to write one, here's my review of this disturbing animation, which, despite being nominated for a BAFTA award, has been seldom seen over the past twenty years. Karen Watson, the creator of this piece, was sexually molested by her father during her childhood, and this film presents a somewhat abstract representation of those painful years. There's quite a variety of animation techniques on display, from traditional drawn animation to Monty Python-style collage effects and some Jan Svankmajer-inspired model animation using pre-existing props and knick-knacks as parts of the 'characters' (one character's head is a vase, for example) as well as punkishly grubby-looking plasticine models. Both more and less than the sum of its parts, this eight-minute film has the power to unsettle and silence even the most jaded viewer, particularly with its powerful closing statement, apparently a quote from Watson's father - "All men give their daughters presents, what's wrong with the gift of love?" - and the surreal, occasionally nightmarish visuals give the whole thing an uncomfortable frisson.
