Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney on Being Fired and Unwittingly Delivering Drugs

Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney on Being Fired and Unwittingly Delivering Drugs
The early years of an actor’s career can be tough going, as Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney discussed during Variety’s “Actors on Actors.”

When Janney asked if Rockwell had ever been fired from an acting job, he said he had been axed from several gigs, while Janney said she has never had to deal with that kind of experience. “I was fired from NBC. When I was 18, I did a pilot and then they re-shot all my stuff,” Rockwell said. “I think Phil Hoffman was fired a couple times. I think a lot of good people have been fired.”

He also said, while the experience was “devastating,” after a week or two, he came to terms with the loss of the role. “You figure it out,” he said. “What else are you going to do? I think I went and got a restaurant job or something.”

For her part, Janney said when

Saoirse Ronan and Kristen Wiig on the Necessity to Unwind Between Roles
Saoirse Ronan and Kristen Wiig discussed the importance of taking personal time amid their busy schedules during a conversation for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series.

“What it boils down to is my mom is the best,” Ronan said of her own ability to stay grounded.

Though she made her feature film debut in 2007’s “I Could Never Be Your Woman,” Ronan said going to industry parties and events to promote her current project, “Lady Bird,” “feels like it’s happening for the first time,” adding, “I really wasn’t a part of all that when I was a kid.”

Ronan also noted the external stress child actors now face given the growing presence of social media.

“I don’t know if it’s just me, but I do think there’s more pressure put on kids who are actors or in the public eye to be on social media and promote themselves,” Ronan said. “None of that

John Oliver Engages in Heated Exchange With Dustin Hoffman Over Sexual Harassment Claims
John Oliver and Dustin Hoffman engaged in a tense discussion about the sexual harassment allegations facing Hoffman during a panel at an anniversary screening of the film “Wag the Dog” Monday night.

Oliver was moderating the Tribeca Institute panel, which also included Robert de Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal, and director Barry Levinson. Oliver brought up the issue of an allegation made against Hoffman by Anna Graham Hunter that he had groped her when she was a 17-year-old intern on the set of Hoffman’s “Death of A Salesman.”

“This is something we’re going to have to talk about because … it’s hanging in the air,” the HBO host said. He stated that he felt Hoffman’s partial apology at the time of Graham Hunter’s allegation to be insufficient.

“It’s hanging in the air?” Hoffman replied. “From a few things you’ve read you’ve made an incredible assumption about me,” he said, continuing,

Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp Are America's Favorite Movie Stars

Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp Are America's Favorite Movie Stars
At the end of every year, The Harris Poll conducts a nationwide survey of American moviegoers to find out which movie stars are the most beloved. This year, they polled 2,252 U.S. adults between December 9 and December 14 to determine America's Favorite Movie Star, which was won by Bridge of Spies star Tom Hanks. This is the fifth time he has taken the top spot, following wins in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2013. He also jumped up four spots from last year, when he took the #5 spot.

This year's runner-up was Black Mass star Johnny Depp, who rose from the fourth spot last year. Despite winning critical acclaim for both of their movies this year, neither Tom Hanks nor Johnny Depp scored Oscar nominations for their performances. Rounding out the top 5 this year are Denzel Washington who topped the list last year but didn't have a movie released in 2015, the late great John Wayne and Han Solo himself,

Comic Book Review – Star Trek: New Visions – “Resistance”

Villordsutch reviews Star Trek: New Visions – “Resistance”…

If I were to tell you that the Borg are about to enter Kirk and Co.’s universe, you’d quite possible have two sensations, as I did – the first being excitement for seeing the Borg and Kirk go toe-to-toe and secondly have a sense of dread knowing the power of the Borg is about to be diluted – once again – for the sake of a quick grab of cash and fan baiting. Well would you be interested to read that in this issue Kirk doesn’t physically go toe-to-toe with the Borg and I also don’t feel – in anyway – that the Borg have been watered down; if anything John Byrne has given them back a boost of power and mystery.

The Enterprise is currently en route to the distant Outpost Omega-70 to investigate the reason for it suddenly falling silent, after

‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1′ maintains the top spot at the weekend box office

Despite a drop of over 50% between weekend box office grosses, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1, the latest entry in the young adult dystopia film series, once again took the top spot at the domestic weekend box office, repeating its opening weekend feat. While making only $56.8 million over the three days, the film benefitted from an overall dip in box office revenue, which is down about 20% from the same weekend in 2013. With two weekends in theatres under its belt, forecasters are also beginning to get a clearer picture of how well the movie might do by the end of the year, and while it is going to leave a mark, the film seems unlikely to dethrone this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy as the top grossing domestic film. With the latter film sitting at $331 million, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 1 has a ways to go to catch up,

James Garner 1928-2014

James Garner 1928-2014
Though his TV work outshone his big screen roles, James Garner was a legend no matter the size of the screen. So it’s sad to report that he has died at the age of 86.Boasting an easy charm, rugged good looks and a flexible ability to inhabit comedy and drama, Garner delivered masculinity while merrily able to undercut it to supreme effect. Born James Scott Baumgarner in Oklahoma in 1928, he lost his mother when he was just four. Dropping out of high school at 16, Garner joined the merchant marine navy, only to suffer from chronic sea sickness, forcing him to quit and move to Los Angeles to live with his father. He briefly went back to school at Hollywood High and scored a swimsuit-modelling job. But further work in front of a camera would have to wait, as he spent a period drifting through odd jobs, and was then

Peter Bradshaw's review of Turbo

The winner

Following a session that saw the lowest grosses of any weekend in 2013 so far, box office has bounced back, thanks to the arrival at last of some commercially strong new product. Both Turbo and Captain Phillips delivered numbers north of £3m. The last time a film – any film, let alone two at once – managed a £3m-plus session was back in late August with the arrival of One Direction: This Is Us.

In the official chart, DreamWorks Animation's Turbo grabs the top spot with £3.89m, boosted by £1.77m in previews. That number compares unfavourably with the previous effort from the company, The Croods, which kicked off with £5.37m including £1.85m in previews back in March. Turbo's result
