• Original Italian version (rated T, suitable for all ages) runs 109 minutes. Miramax cut the film down to a running time of around 92 minutes, in order to obtain a R rating. Gone or shortened were many of Renato's dream sequences with Malena which involve a lot more nudity than in the cut version.
  
  
• Among the scenes cut from the American version of the film include several of Renato's sexual fantasies, including a scene where he undresses Malena, and another in which Malena strips naked in front of him in a fantasy and then in reality a lookalike prostitute climbs sensuously on top of him in bed.
