Sex & Nudity

  • The film features a lot of teen pregnancies and girls "going on vacation" to Antigonish, which is the polite way of saying that the girls are forced to leave Cape Breton to go have their babies in an unwed mothers' home.
  • Moonie has a sexual relationship with a young teacher several years older than she is. Everybody turns a blind eye to it but then Moonie lies about being pregnant and everybody assumes he's the father.
  • Abortion is briefly implied during a medical appointment.
  • Moonie's pregnant friend gives her a Mason jar of pee so that she can falsify her pregnancy tests.
  • Moonie's sisters tell her that "when you're dating a guy and you feel something poking you and he says it's his belt buckle, it isn't... it's somethin' else."
  • Moonie is called a slut several times, including by her 10-year-old brother.
  • Moonie is seen in the bathtub from the shoulders up.
  • Kids casually make out at a party.
  • A girl is called a "fuckin' lesbo Ontario bitch."
  • Girls colour ovary and penis diagrams for sex education class, and one girl puts glitter on hers.
  • A couple walk down the street; the boy is cheating on his girlfriend with another girl and the girlfriend has her hands down his pants.
  • Characters have a wedding in extremely bad taste during a funeral. The bride is pregnant.
  • A pregnant girl creates a scene during a boxing match by stealing the announcer's microphone and cheering to the crowd that she's pregnant.
  • Lou's mom dresses in provocative clothing, as do three local girls in town.
  • Some sexual phrases and terms are said throughout the film.
  • A statue of Jesus Christ with no shirt on nailed to the cross is seen.
  • A girl goes into labour in the back of a truck.
  • A girl tells her brother that she's "above the waist" when it comes to sex.
  • Male teacher mutters something to 15-year-old girl he teaches about wanting "to seduce" her. He later admits he's in love with her. He kisses her to make her parents think he got her pregnant, so that she can go to an NYC art school. He says "you gonna kiss me like a hero or what?" She shrugs and passionately kisses him.
  • Moonie and a boy her age go into an alley. She unbuttons her blouse and then leaves him there to make onlookers assume they had sex. After she's done teasing him, he tugs at his boner, says he's going to tell people she jumped him, and then he tells her that he gets good-looking girls from all over Cape Breton to see him.
  • A shirtless hockey player comes out of a locker room.
  • A boy excitedly shouts out "I'm a VIRGIN!" but is then embarrassed.

Violence & Gore

  • Three local girls bother Lou and threaten her, but later on befriend her and Moonie.
  • Moonie's parents argue with her about New York.
  • Boxing matches are seen, and Lou frequently punches people in the street enough to knock them out cold.
  • Moonie's mom tips over the teacher's trailer in a fit of rage.
  • Moonie does a disturbing school project using lumps of coal stuck together in the form of dolls and acts out a scene where the coal dolls discuss the negative health effects of burning coal.
  • A boy comes into the house with blood all over his face, excitedly announcing that he's made a friend.
  • A boy lies in front of a car with blood on his face but doesn't appear to be seriously injured.
  • Moonie trips and falls over a stack of gymnastics mats.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A fat girl vomits at a party and Moonie holds her hair back.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The boxing match is somewhat intense.
  • Moonie's departure from home was something she longed for initially, but she ends up having second thoughts which causes a sad ending.
  • The punching scenes and brief scenes of blood are rather disturbing.
  • Characters, including Moonie herself, are very harsh at first towards Lou because she isn't a local or a Canadian for that matter. Lou is eventually accepted and befriended by a few characters but still has trouble fitting in.
  • Moonie's adverse effects of coal school project is somewhat disturbing.
