Porthwar-based Santram is killed while fleeing from Muslims during the religious riots of 1948 following the partition of Pakistan from India. His wife, Tagpyariye, manages to flee along with their sons, Kartar and Ram, but gets separated from them, and the children end up with her servant, Dukhiya. Shortly thereafter Kartar, too, gets separated, leaving Ram alone with Dukhiya. Three years later, Ram runs away after being physically abused and forced to steal by Dukhiya, and unknowingly befriends Kartar, and the duo go to work with Subedar Varyam Singh. Nanak Dukhiya Sub Sansar is a story of the separation of one family caused by the Muslim/Hindu time of separation over land. Many Sikhs had to leave their homes and while doing so, families were torn apart and killed by the Muslims. This is a story of Ram and Kartar, who were separated by this particular situation, but grew up together not knowing they are real blood. Years pass, as they both often mention and reminisce of their mother and a brother they both have lost. Ram (the younger brother) is off in the city getting educated and there meets an old lady. Kartar, back home is the backbone of the entire Pind. He falls in love with a beautiful girl named Jita, who has just arrived back home from the city. Problem arises when Ram returns home and he, too falls deeply in love with Jita. He asks Kartar to ask for Jita's hand in marriage, unaware of his older brother's feelings and Kartar being the older wise brother, happily chooses to give up his love, only Jita disagrees. Upon hearing this and being heavily influenced by the village Evil Peter, Ram and Kartar now want each other dead. They both open fire as out of nowhere, steps in the old lady Ram met in the city. Shots are fired, and she lays there wounded. Have Ram and Kartar just shot their own mother? Watch Nanak Dukhiya Sub Sansar to see if this family ever reunites.
