Claustrophobic, 5 September 2005
Author: Paul English from Ireland

'Ring Once For Death', along with 'Sign It Death' are the most powerful and effective episodes of Thriller's second series. Michael Jayston plays the part of Roger Masters, one of the most cunning and evil individuals ever to grace a television screen. Jayston also went on to reprise this role in series 3's 'A Coffin For The Bride'. As with 'Sign It Death', this episode is primarily concerned with employer vs employee and the lengths the latter will go to in order to fulfill their deadly obsession.

Laura Vallance is a wealthy and recently widowed lady who decides to hire a manservant. She gets Masters, who quickly goes about getting rid of the sole other employee of the house, the maid Betty, and replacing her with his own girlfriend. Gradually he ingratiates himself into the trust of Mrs Vallance and quickly puts his plan to action - to gradually poison her to death.

The beautiful Nyree Dawn Porter plays the hapless but spirited Vallance while Barry Nelson excels as her sole hope of a saviour - Hugo Fane. Masters' plan is breathtaking in its audacity and the episode is truly gripping with an extremely dramatic climax.

Not to be missed.
