Big portions of boxoffice were on the menu for Universal's Red Dragon this weekend as the prequel to Orion's The Silence of the Lambs served up a sizzling estimate of $37.5 million. The boxoffice debut of Dragon surpassed the $28.6 million racked up by Universal's Meet the Parents and easily took the crown as the biggest October opening in history. Buena Vista's Sweet Home Alabama placed second with an estimated $21.6 million, down 39%, upping the estimated cume to date for the Reese Witherspoon starrer to a stellar $65.6 million in a mere 10 days. DreamWorks' The Tuxedo was off a moderate 33% from its debut, grossing an estimated $10.1 million to take the third slot, moving the total for the Jackie Chan-Jennifer Love Hewitt starrer to about $28.1 million. Artisan's CG-animated family film Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie arrived in 940 theaters -- a third to a half of the theaters occupied by the session's top films -- to place sixth with an estimated gross of $6.5 million. IFC's My Big Fat Greek Wedding became the highest-grossing independent film in history as the total boxoffice for the romantic comedy-drama moved up to $148 million -- surpassing the $140.5 million scared up by Artisan's The Blair Witch Project. This weekend, Greek Wedding was in the fourth spot with an estimated $8.5 million, off a scant 10% from a week earlier. »
